Saffron, once prized for its colour and flavour, is now gaining attention for its effects on the ageing brain.

Recent human trials show saffron can match Alzheimer’s drugs like donepezil and memantine for cognitive outcomes, with fewer side effects. It also supports mood and reduces inflammation, both key factors in cognitive decline.

At around 30 mg per day, saffron improved cognition in mild to moderate Alzheimer’s and slowed decline in mild cognitive impairment. The evidence is early but consistent, and its safety record is strong.
