You may feel frustrated if you find yourself gaining weight when you stop smoking, even though you're eating less. This can occur because smoking has been shown to slightly increase your metabolism, which then slows down once ni****ne is withdrawn. Once you stop smoking however, evidence would suggest that any weight gain is relatively small, less that 10lbs. That small weight gain is far less dangerous than the impact of continuing to smoke and can be easily remedied.

However, there are some simple things you can do to increase your basal metabolic rate (the rate at which your body expends energy to maintain essential life functions while at complete rest.), or how fast you burn calories:

1. Do aerobics. Aerobic exercise is an effective method for burning more calories. Take a brisk walk or go for a morning swim. Find a variety of activities that you enjoy.

2. Increase your muscle mass . Even a modest gain in muscle mass will help you burn more calories all day and night. Try lifting weights or toning your body with Pilates or yoga.

3. Eat more frequently. Eating food actually stimulates your metabolism because calories get burned in the process of digestion. Most of the action takes place in the first hour after dining, so try eating smaller meals with some healthy snacks in between.

4. Forget about magical solutions. All foods have about the same effect when it comes to burning calories. You might as well enjoy a cup of coffee rather than waste money on fat burning pills whose only active ingredient is caffeine.

One of the things smokers often mention to me during our consultations is their concern that they will put on weight when they stop smoking, and this is often a reason given for people continuing to smoke…so can stopping smoking cause you to gain weight?

Smoking is an appetite suppressant – it lowers your appetite and because smoking also affects your sense of smell and taste, it makes eating less enjoyable. So, when we stop smoking, our appetite increases, and our improved sense of smell and taste make eating more enjoyable.
When we stop smoking we sometimes seek out something different to do to replace the smoking habit, and often that is eating, and if we used smoking to help us deal with negative emotions, then we may start to emotionally eat as well.

So what practical things can we do to help you resist the urge to eat more once you have stopped smoking?

1. Drink more water. Plain water is the best thing you can reach for when you experience oral cravings. It's free of calories and keeps you hydrated. It will also suppress your appetite naturally. Create a pleasant ritual by keeping a jug on your desk and carrying along a water bottle wherever you go.

2. Chew gum. Sugar-free chewing gum is another good friend to have around. The chewing action can help substitute for the satisfaction you got from ci******es. It's even good for your teeth because it stimulates saliva, which breaks down bacteria. Be careful though as too much can upset your stomach!

3. Eat more slowly. If you spend more time eating the same amount of food, you'll avoid packing on pounds and may even improve your digestion. Chew slowly. Put your fork and spoon down in between each bite.

4. Seek out distractions. Even if your cravings are intense, you'll feel better knowing that the hardest part will be behind you within a few weeks. Meanwhile, take your mind off your discomfort by having a refreshing nap or playing with your kids.

5. Give yourself non-food rewards. Look forward to all the money you'll save on cigarette purchases. Try spending some of that on movie tickets or a good book to avoid feeling deprived

Time is probably the most common reason people give for not being able to stick to their resolutions, but in reality, that means that you are not prioritising them or yourself.

We claim that our busy lives stop us planning healthy meals, shopping for healthier foods, or going to the gym, but we will happily scroll through social media for hours a week. I have a Digital Wellbeing app on my phone that tells me how much time I have spent on social media, and I can even limit my screen time if I want, but with us living in such a digital age, we have the ability to research/plan healthy meals, shop for food, and work out in our own homes without even leaving the house, saving us time if we don’t get distracted by social media posts.

So how can you make more time? If you are the only person who does all of the cooking and cleaning, try and spread the load with other family members, maybe taking it in turn to cook. Perhaps you could get up a little earlier to do your exercises? You could batch cook meals so that you aren’t cooking every evening. You could sign up to one of those meal kit companies like Hello Fresh or Gousto. You could keep your gym kit in the car so that you go on your way home from work or in your lunch hour. Actually leave work on time and/or take your lunch hour (instead of working through for free – one of my biggest bugbears with my clients!) and go for a walk, do the shopping, or do some research.

This is why I’m so excited to let you in on my pre-launch offer for my online 12 week weight loss, fitness & wellbeing programme, because it fits around you and your lifestyle. We created this product for people who want to lose weight, get fit and increase their wellbeing, but who struggle to fit in classes, sessions or the gym. Is that you?

If so, keep an eye out at 6pm this evening for details of my special launch offer – there are only a limited number available at the launch price

Sometimes our progress is slower than expected…and that is ok. There might be a good reason for this, or it could just be that your goals are unrealistic. It could be that things started off well but then plateaued. It could be that you are not putting enough effort ion, or your motivation has taken a dip.

In current times, we are so used to things happening quickly if not immediately. When I was at school if we wanted information, we had to send off for it or perhaps go to the library. These days, we can find information out instantly, even by asking Alexa or Siri…we don’t even have to type anything in. It’s handy but has this digital age made us expect everything to happen quickly.

The chances are that if your goals are weight or fitness related, it took you some time to put that weight on or get that unfit, so why should reversing that be quick too?
If your goals are weight related, 1-2lbs a week is the recommended healthy amount of weight to lose for sustainable results. Getting fitter can happen a lot quicker, depending on the amount of exercise you are doing.

Just don’t be in too much of a hurry – you’ll get there!

If weight loss and fitness are the things you want to change but are stick in a rut, then Hypnocise is for you!

If you don’t have the right support system in place, your motivation levels may drop, and you will struggle to stay committed to your resolution. Sometimes close family or friends are fed up of listening to your struggles and aren’t very supportive, so finding someone who will be there for you in moments of doubt will be invaluable. This is why slimming clubs, Alcoholics Anonymous etc work so well.

Now this support system could be a slimming group, the people who are in your exercise class or running club, or even your partner or family member. My gym has a Facebook Group for members but there may be other online groups that could provide that support. I’m a member of a business support group and it is lovely to see how everyone picks others up if they are stuck or struggling.

Whoever they are, they don’t even need to have the same goals as you but having someone to talk to when things aren’t quite going to plan will help you to avoid catastrophic thinking (“I’ve ruined everything”), mental filtering (“I always give up”) and self-criticism (“I’m useless”), and help you to get motivated again and back on track.

Being able to identify these unhelpful ways of thinking will serve you well and this one of the topics covered in my new Hypnocise On Demand Programme – available on Friday with a special launch offer price!

Having a setback can really derail you, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Having the odd unhealthy meal or missing a gym session, isn’t going to make much of a difference, but if it becomes too much of a habit then perhaps you need to look a bit closer at what is happening.

I personally hate the word ‘fail’ when clients are talking about their achievements (or lack of) so I ban my clients from using that word. If a marathon runner trains for 4 months then has a bad week…do they give up if their times/performance takes a dip? Do they think the previous 4 months of hard work were wasted? No, they review what has happened, look at what changes might be needed, or change their training. They adapt, and that is exactly what we should do.
If something doesn’t quite go to plan, then we need to take the emotion out of it, review what happened and rather than give up, learn from the situation, make changes, adapt.
When a baby starts trying to walk and falls over, it doesn’t think ‘sod this’ and never try again. It keeps on, uses tables and sofas to pull themselves up, falls down, tries again, and so on. The same thing can be said about most of the things that surround us – they were all made through trial and error, and so we should allow ourselves some flexibility... and accept that setbacks lead to learning what works and what doesn't.
Always be kind to yourself!

16/01/2023

Sometimes the reason we don’t keep to our resolutions is that, if we are really honest with ourselves, we are not really serious about them…it’s more a thought or idea rather than something we actually plan to do. It’s a bit like saying we will try and stop smoking/eat healthier/exercise more, when in reality, we are only going to ‘try’ and not actually ‘do’ it.

So you do need to make a firm commitment to yourself that you are doing that resolution, whatever it is.

One way to help with this is to set yourself clear and achievable goals. This will keep you on track, give you something to aim for, and help with motivation. Be sure to make sure that you are making SMART goals, that is, goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-framed.

If you want to know more about setting SMART goals for your weigh loss and fitness resolutions, you might be interested in an online programme I’m launching on Friday!

Did you know that yesterday was Quitter’s Day, or that Monday is apparently Ditch New Year's Resolution Day?

We have a love/hate relationship with New Year Resolutions and it is more about the timing of them rather than the idea itself.

We get stuck in this mindset that we have to make changes on the 1st January, a Monday, the first day of a month, or even just first thing in the morning. The truth of the matter is…that you can start at any time you like…right now if you wish!

But are you prepared? Have you made plans as to the way forward? How will you know that you’re making progress? Do you truly believe that you can do it?

It’s easy to say you will do something or make that change, but if you aren’t prepared for it, you are most likely setting yourself up to fail.

There are a number of reasons why people give up on their resolutions, especially the weight loss/fitness ones.

But don’t worry if you ‘quit’ today or ‘ditch your resolution’ on Monday to lose weight or get fit, because we will be posting each day next week about the top 5 reasons people don’t continue with their weight loss and fitness resolutions and on Friday, we will have a special offer for you that will help you get back on track!
