An innovative programme designed to support young people make healthy life choices has launched a new website for parents and carers in Highland.

Vicki Clark, an NHS Highland Health Improvement Specialist, said: "At the start of the year we asked parents and carers how they wanted us to communicate with them and how we could share the work that we are doing with them whilst also encouraging involvement and engagement. Parents and carers are the main influence in supporting the health and wellbeing of their child and we need to be able to listen to them to find out what they need to support them in this role.

“One of the options they came back with was an online portal where they could access information and learning opportunities, but also where they could share their thoughts and ideas while also allowing for increased opportunity for two way communication and learning.

“We really are keen to hear from parents and carers about their feedback on the site, what works, what doesn’t and what they would like to see added for us to improve it further.”

Both Anna & George will be observing the Clinicians whilst here and this forms a very important part of their medical education.

However, if you would prefer to see the Clinician alone then please let Reception know when booking your appointment or when you arrive at the Health Centre.

We’re proud to launch SafeConnect in partnership with Police Scotland – a new safeguarding initiative to support people with dementia who may be at risk of going missing.

The SafeConnect fob is a small, yellow device that can be carried or attached to clothing. It holds secure emergency contact details and can be scanned with a smartphone using Near Field Communication (NFC) to help quickly reunite someone with their loved ones or carers.

After a successful pilot in Argyll & Bute and West Dunbartonshire, we're now rolling out SafeConnect fobs free of charge to anyone living with dementia across Scotland.

To request a free SafeConnect set-up pack or learn more about the initiative, please visit our website - www.alzscot.org/safeconnect-request/

Worried about exam results? You’re not alone. Our support for the campaign features some of the team whose stories prove that enthusiasm and determination matter more than straight career paths.

Staff Nurse, Beth Gent writes:

In 6th year of school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I felt under pressure to go to university, as it seemed like the ‘right thing’, and many of my friends were going. I worried I would find academic study challenging and I’d never find my dream job so decided to take my time to explore other paths.

Taking a 6-month internship with a charity gave me time to think about my options. I had a vague interest in nursing and, as a caring individual, I decided to pursue that path. I applied for a nursing auxiliary job at Raigmore Hospital and was successful. This was the best decision I could have made as it gave me a solid grounding for my career and ensured I understood what becoming a Registered Nurse would entail.

After 5 years as a nursing auxiliary, and the encouragement and support of my colleagues, I studied to become a Registered Nurse doing my nursing degree at UHI Inverness. I thoroughly enjoyed the course despite the challenges of the pandemic.

I successfully completed the Adult Nursing Programme with a Distinction. I’ve been qualified for 3 years now, and my job is enjoyable, interesting, and rewarding. I work with a wide variety of patients and colleagues from different disciplines. I have also undertaken a secondment in a more specialist nursing role increasing my knowledge and skills further and I hope to continue to pursue this new opportunity in the future.

If you had said to me, when I left school, how great and varied a career I could have in nursing, I would have probably laughed, as I never thought I’d be good enough to excel so much in such a rewarding career!

We all know how important activity is for people no matter what stage of cancer, and the trained Cancer Rehab Facilitator at Highlife Highland has received incredibly positive feedback from the small group of existing participants. Due to the nature of the programme being a drop-in (and not referral dependent), they would like to widen awareness of the programme.
