I LOVE writing my newsletters and I love getting replies, hearing other parents' stories and getting new insight. I put a lot of time and care into my newsletters and that is where I want to keep my focus so I'm taking a break, possibly long term, from social media.

Please sign up to my mailing list using the link below and you can also follow me on YouTube as I'll still be adding helpful sensory activity videos when I get chance😊

I had a lovely walk in woods today and my mind had the space to to ponder and wonder! ...so I came home and wrote it all in my blog! I'd love to know your thoughts; we are all different and there's no right or wrong with a topic like this šŸ’–

Some thoughts about the move from awareness to acceptance and whether we have gone far enough.

My son has recently started some online learning with the amazing The Learning Circle and it's shown me how the education system could be. In mainstream schools there are some fantastic teachers but many tell me how they are constrained by an outdated curriculum and system.

Most parents want their children to embrace their uniqueness, follow their passions and develop a love of learning. We nurture and encourage our children; we build them up but then šŸ’£šŸ’„the school system knocks them right down!

There are some schools and of course home education that offers a different way but this is for the minority. Imagine a future where ALL children...
⭐Direct their own learning at their own pace
⭐Follow their passions
⭐Are celebrated for their unique skills
⭐Thrive as a member of a community
⭐Develop confidence and leadership skills
⭐Learn how to think critically
⭐Develop a life long love of learning

Weighted teddies in Aldi at the moment for £9.99. They can be really helpful for sitting on the sofa with after school to help relax or at bed time. Schools might find them helpful for sensory chill breaks too 😊

I have to resist sharing every one of Dr Naomi Fisher's posts! This one really spoke to me today. I'm ready for change and so many of the parents and teachers I speak to are ready for change too. We're fed up and tired of a school system that is not designed for children šŸ˜”

One of the mysteries of life for me is why we have designed school in such a way that it requires children to do so many things which are very hard for them - and which become much easier in adulthood.

We require them to sit still when they are desperate to move. To stay in their seats when they want to crawl under the table. To keep quiet and listen when their body wants to play and shout.

We tell them to walk not run, when every part of their body longs to move fast. We put them into nylon trousers when they’d prefer soft leggings. We make a big deal out of things they can’t do yet, but which almost everyone learns as they grow up. Shapes, colours, telling the time. We teach them to read before they have the desire for themselves, and make them do maths which they find incomprehensibly difficult, but that a few years later will feel so simple as to be trivial. No matter whether you go to school or not.

We’ve designed school so that it’s hard for immature brains and bodies, and then we blame children and parents when they can’t follow the rules. We tell them they aren’t school-ready, or they need to try harder. We point out all the many ways in which they fall short. Too noisy, too active, too impulsive, too….childish.

By the time those children reach adolescence, the urge to roll on the floor or hang off the chair is fading, but the years of being told they have to sit still and listen have taken their toll. They’ve lost the raw energy of childhood, but it’s more than that. They’ve lost their joy in learning, because school wasn’t built for the child they were, any more than it is for the teenager they’ve become.

And then again, it’s them who are blamed. Disruptive, rude, bad attitudes. It would be so much better if they simply did what they were told.

But what we’re telling them to do in school is squashing our children. Children aren’t built to sit still and absorb information. They are built to keep moving and playing. To hang upside down and climb on the roof. To dream and shout and talk all the time.

But when our children tell us so, we’re not listening. We tell them that the problem is them. Their behaviour, their energy, their whims and their propensity to roll on the carpet if they get the chance

Who are the slow learners?

Not them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again! ...I LOVE my job and it truly is an honour to do this work. I am so grateful for the trust that families place in me. Sensory Success has been one of my best ever creations - apart from my children of course 🤣

Over the holidays I came across these fantastic visuals from occupational therapist Dr Annie Baltazar Mori .

Most people have some understanding of sensory reactivity e.g. being sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, haircuts etc. Not as many people understand that our sensory perception affects our ability to participate in everyday tasks such as getting dressed, swimming, riding a bike, handwriting and much more.

Christmas day for my family has changed dramatically over the years as I’ve started to accept that what suits many families isn’t what suits us.

We don’t have family round, we stay in our PJs, one son eats chicken nuggets and waffles as normal and he doesn’t sit with us, one son knows exactly what presents he’s getting with no surprises, the other son doesn't like presents so gets a little holiday in January instead. It’s taken years for us to do Christmas 100% our way and it’s so much better!

However you do Christmas for your family, I hope you have a lovely one. Happy Christmas šŸŽ„šŸŽ…

Is it OK that I'm crying at the first paragraph 😭 Burnout is so present for my son right now and it takes it's toll on the whole family. So hard seeing him with more exhaustion than sparkle... and the fear that the sparkle will go out completely. So grateful to Dr Naomi Fisher for writing this book that my son will hopefully read after I've read it šŸ™
