St Mary's Hospice

St Mary's Hospice Thanks to our community we can continue to make a difference when it matters most At St Mary's care is provided free of charge, but it is not cost free.

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness. Our facilities and services are available to all adults who are facing the end of life, and to their families, carers and the bereaved. Patients with life limiting illnesses are cared for at the Hospice, as inpatients or by attendance at day cl

inics or therapy sessions, and - increasingly - at home. We care for patients facing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, and for those who love them. Patients and carers may access our holistic programmes, addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, at any stage of an illness. Just to maintain our current services costs around £3.5 million a year.

It was a pleasure to welcome The Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alex Scott, and his wife Sam to St Mary’s Hospice for a tour. During their tour, they learned more about the expansion of our Community Services and had the opportunity to meet some of our wonderful volunteers and dedicated staff.

We’re also delighted that Alex and Sam will be opening their beautiful gardens at the Matson Ground Estate on 21st June in support of St Mary’s Hospice.

More information about the Open Garden event coming soon.

Thank you both for your continued generosity and support- we look forward to a wonderful day!

Our trekkers have made it!

The final day of the Everest Base Camp trek brought a big challenge: 20km on the trail, with 1,400m of descent and around 900m of ascent. Even with the lower altitude, everyone was feeling the accumulated fatigue, and it took real determination to push through.

After roughly 7 hours of trekking, the team made it back to Lukla.

A huge achievement for the whole team, this is not an easy trek to complete, and every single person should be proud of what they’ve accomplished.

Tonight they will celebrate and tomorrow (hopefully) fly back to Kathmandu.

Well done, team

Thank you Thursday 💜

This week, we’re celebrating our wonderful Bereavement Craft Groups. Back in February, they created the beautiful memory stones you may remember from our National Legacy Campaign. These were displayed across our hospice shops Retail at St Mary's Hospice and our The Orangery Cafe & Gift Shop at St Mary's Hospice, helping to spread the lasting legacy message.

Through donations alone, the group raised an incredible £90.32– a fantastic achievement and a real testament to their teamwork!

Our Bereavement Group is open to anyone going through grief- it’s a relaxed, welcoming space to chat, get creative, and feel supported.

Huge congratulations to our very own Dr John Culling, who yesterday completed his latest solo adventure in support of St Mary’s Hospice. Dr Culling took on his next stage of the GR131, a long-distance, coast-to-coast trail running across seven Canary Islands covering 560km....

Having previously run Lanzarote and Fuerteventura north to south, Gran Canaria was a completely different terrain with elevation gains of over 4500 metres (15000 feet) with some steep ascents to the top and long descents to the coast with some wild camping required along the way just to add to the excitement!

Dr Culling plans to complete all seven islands along the route over time and has to date raised an amazing £9322.45 through his incredible endeavors.

We are all truly proud and immensely grateful for all your efforts. Thank You
💜

Jessica Muckelt will be taking on the Virtual London Marathon next Sunday, raising money for St Mary’s Hospice 💛

A long-time supporter, she’s always gone above and beyond to give back, even completing Walk to Remember in her wheelchair! We are so proud to have her as part of our hospice family.

Jess won’t be doing it alone, she’ll be joined by Becket, her loyal 8-year-old Lab, and Daisy, her 17-week-old Papillon pup (who may be doing part of the marathon from Jess’s lap, but definitely believes she’s doing it all!).

With less than one week to go- if you’re able to support Jess, every donation makes a difference 💛

18 months ago, Jonny and Matthew signed up for the challenge of a lifetime: trekking to Everest Base Camp. Before even setting off, they had raised an incredible £10,000

Sadly, just two weeks before the trek, Jonny was involved in a serious road traffic accident which resulted in him having to have his leg amputated.
Determined to honour him, the team continued, carrying a flag for Jonny all the way to Everest Base Camp and raising it at the top in his name 🏔️

An inspiring reminder of resilience, friendship, and the power of team spirit.

We’re all wishing Jonny a strong recovery, and we know one day he’ll take on Everest Base Camp himself when the time is right 💪

THEY DID IT!!!

After days of pushing through thin air, aching legs, early mornings, and moments that tested every ounce of strength they had, our trekkers have officially reached Everest Base Camp.

This wasn’t just a journey across mountains. It was a journey within. Every step carried determination. Every breath at altitude was earned. Every challenge became part of a story they’ll carry for life.

A heartfelt thank you to Matt LMG Treks & Expeditions for the incredible care and dedication he showed on the trek — not only guiding our walkers safely every step of the way, but constantly lifting spirits, offering strength and advice, and looking out for everyone both mentally and physically. His support makes a real difference, helping the whole group push on and reach the summit together — something they will never forget.

This is what happens when you refuse to give up.

Everest Base Camp: conquered.
