St Mary's Hospice

St Mary's Hospice Thanks to our community we can continue to make a difference when it matters most At St Mary's care is provided free of charge, but it is not cost free.

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness. Our facilities and services are available to all adults who are facing the end of life, and to their families, carers and the bereaved. Patients with life limiting illnesses are cared for at the Hospice, as inpatients or by attendance at day clinics or therapy sessions, and - increasingly - at home. We care for patients facing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, and for those who love them. Patients and carers may access our holistic programmes, addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, at any stage of an illness. Just to maintain our current services costs around £3.5 million a year.

A huge thank you to Abbey House for generously gifting us a complementary night stay with breakfast for our Walk To Remember fire dancers on Friday night! Our performers had come all of the way from London so the support of Abbey House made their attendance at the event possible and I am sure we can all agree that the fire dancers really added something magical to the event 🔥✨💜

Just look at this giant sunflower blooming at the hospice! 🌻

Our Gardening Group nurtured it all the way from a tiny seed and planted it on the terrace outside the In-Patient Unit. As you can see, it’s grown incredibly tall — but can you guess just how high it is?

Share your guesses in the comments below! We’d also love to see your own sunflower photos, so don’t forget to post them too.

Last Friday, a truly inspiring young man Dan Hopkins, took part in the Walk to Remember in memory of a loved one. Despite living with cerebral palsy—which affects his mobility, speech, and energy—Dan completed the entire 10-mile walk using his wheeled walking frame.

Not only did he raise £1,000, but he also personally matched it with another £1,000—bringing his total to an incredible £2,000.

At just 20, he continues to amaze everyone around him with his positivity, kindness, generosity, and brilliant sense of humour. His determination and selflessness are nothing short of inspirational.

Well done to Dan and a massive thank you for fundraising for St Mary's Hospice 👏💙
