10% of the UK population suffer with migraines, affecting 1 in 5 woman and 1 in 15 men.
What Is a migraine?
Migraine is a disorder of the brain, built up of 4 stages; Premonitory, aura, headache, recovery or postdrome. Migraine can be acute episodic (infrequent attacks) or chronic (symptoms more often than not, for three months or longer). It is believed Migraine sufferers hypothalamic region of their brains are more sensitive to environmental stimulus.
Premonitory phase
This phase normally starts 72 hours before the migraine.
It is hypothesised a change in Homeostasis (maintenance of constant internal environment) in the hypothalamic region of the brain is what starts the process.
Triggers to this can be; Stress Hormones Diet Smells Sleep patterns Light Exercise Muscle stiffness Exercise Weather
The symptoms of this phase are;
- Fatigue
- irritability
- yawning
- light/noise/smell sensitivity
- muscle stiffnes
- food cravings
Aura phase
1 In 3 migraine sufferers will get symptoms of aura.
These include;
- spotted, zigzaged or blurred vision
- pins &needles/numbness
- speech difficulties/brain fog
- weakness
It is believed this is caused by a process called cortical spreading depression. This is where neurons on brain surface (dura mater) are firing off for longer than an average person.
Headache phase
This stage involves moderate to severe head pain. The headache is typically throbbing and is made worse by movement. It is usually on one side of the head, especially at the start of an attack. However, you can get pain on both sides, or all over the head.
Other symptoms include;
- Nausea/vomiting
- sensitivity to Light/noise/smell/touch
The theory behined this phase is the Trigeminal nerve is activated which stimulates pain receptors in the brains connective tissue (dura matter).
Recovery or postdrome phase
This is the final stage of an attack, and it can take hours or days for a drained, fatigued or ‘hangover’ type feeling to disappear. Symptoms can be similar to those of the first stage (premonitory). Often, they mirror these symptoms.
