Two weeks ago, my husband and I went on our first four-day walking holiday around the Gower Peninsula, an unspoilt corner of Wales. He’s been doing these walks for ten years and guided me through the preparation, the terrain, and the long days outdoors.
I had often heard that walking all day can bring a meditative state. Now I know it’s true. Spending 6–8 hours in nature gave me space to watch my mind, welcome insights, and reconnect with inner resources.
It also gave me a direct experience of many themes I cover in my mindfulness courses, including:
🌧️ Aversion — wishing the rain would stop.
☀️ Desire — wanting the sun to stay forever.
💪 Trust — discovering I could walk further than I believed.
💗 Compassion — respecting my body and feet rather than judging them.
It was transformative. I’ve been told the benefits last for weeks, and I definitely agree. I’m already looking forward to next year’s walk, which will be a full week long.
💭 I’d love to know — what experiences have been transformative for you?
