San Fu Moxibustion - What it is and Why we do it.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, San Fu Moxibustion is a treatment given during the hottest days of summer. Its aim is to treat winter diseases during the summer. Traditionally, people have been given this treatment in the form of a warming herbal plaster. This treatment is given 3 times over the course of about one month spanning the "dog days of summer".

The theoretical concept behind San Fu is that we are capturing some of the strongest yang energy of the year and storing it away to strengthen our immunity and prepare for autumn and winter when cold, flu, and other respiratory illness are prevalent.

Central to Oriental medicine is the practice of preventative medicine. Given our recent experience of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is vital that we keep our immune systems as strong as possible. The concepts behind San Fu therapy have been clinically researched to do just that!

The Process

Traditionally, in China, the first treatment is given on a specific day in the month of July. A follow-up treatment is given 10 days later, and a final treatment given 10 days after that. The exact dates when the treatments are best given are calculated according to the Chinese Lunar calendar as the three days predicted to be the hottest days of the year. It is thought that at these times you can most effectively treat the ailments of the autumn and winter and support the general health of the immune system by nourishing the yang energy of the body. San Fu treatment effectively helps prevent illness and improves resistance against the cold pathogens of the colder seasons.

Traditionally, San Fu treatment uses acrid, warm and dispersing herbs that are ground into powder and mixed with ginger juice. Once mixed they form an herbal paste. This paste is applied to specific points on the body, usually on the upper back. These points correlate with bolstering the immune system, fortifying the lung and dispersing exterior pathogens. The plaster is left on the points for up to 6 hours. The herbs are very warm and may increase in intensity to produce local redness, heat, and/or even blisters. This is normal and with proper hygiene & care, heal very well. The suggested dosage of treatment is to receive the 3 consecutive treatments during these specific summer dates for 3 summers consecutively.

Having said that, I prefer to perform these treatments using a much more gentle, yet still effective indirect Moxa treatment, and include the use of a TDP heat lamp to drive Yang energy deep into the tissues of the body to obtain the desired effect. This avoids the need to retain plasters on the skin for 6 hours, and removes the risk of blistering

When to get Treatment

The dates specified below are the 'Traditional' dates on which this therapy is performed. The 'Traditional' dates this year are :
2025: July 20, July 30, August 9

A FEW WORDS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

There is a general perception that Acupuncture must be painful as it involves inserting needles into the skin.

Firstly, when performed by a fully qualified and experienced Acupuncturist, the experience should hardly ever be a painful one. Obviously, there are specific exceptions to this, such as when I am trying to bring nerves back into action following a stroke. However, this is a very special case.

If you experience sharp pain from the insertion of a needle, then the needle should be repositioned so that it is no longer causing pain. A strong dull ache will sometimes be experienced, and this is a desired response to needling certain points. But, the experience itself should not be painful – and certainly not traumatising!

If you have had Acupuncture in the past, and it has been a painful experience to you, then I would say, give me a try, and see what receiving Acupuncture from a fully trained and experienced practitioner feels like. You’ll be glad you did!

I received my Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and completed my Doctoral studies at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, Oregon. They were the Number One rated school of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in the US up until there closure last year due to the financial climate.

I offer both Chinese and Japanese styles of Acupuncture. Japanese style Acupuncture is characterised by shallow needle insertion, short needle retention times, and a reduction in post-treatment fatigue – which can occur with the deeper needling and longer retention times of Chinese Acupuncture methods. Japanese style techniques also include the use of Teishin – a stylus that is used to stimulate the Acupuncture point, but does not involve the insertion of any needles.

A word about needle insertion. The Location, Insertion Angle, Length, and Guage of the needles used in your treatment are all specifically tailored to the desired need for stimulation in your individual case. The length and guage of the needle used may vary from treatment to treatment as your body’s needs change. All these factors are designed to ensure maximum safety of the Acupuncture procedure.

It seems like the cost of everything is increasing every day. However, since we own our own facility, we have control over many of our fixed costs. This means that for the Fourth year running, we will not be increasing our fees. We still offer the highest quality Acupuncture and Oriental medicine treatment for the most reasonable cost on the Island.

We are Guernsey's only Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Clinic located on the West Coast (near Perelle). Avoid the hassle of trying to park in town, or dealing with the congestion of other parts of the island. We have ample parking, and are open 8:00am - 8:00pm Monday-Saturday (Sunday and Bank Holidays for emergency pain cases). We schedule our appointments so that you never feel rushed.

Also, did you know that you may be able to reclaim the cost of your treatment with us through your Health Insurance? We do not bill Health Insurance directly, but, we do provide a statement that you can submit to your insurance to reclaim the cost.

We are trained and experienced in treating many complex health conditions (e.g. Stroke recovery, Cancer Support - including Chemo-Related Side-Effects, Parkinson's, MS etc.) as well as the day-to-day issues of Back, Neck, and Shoulder pain, Tennis and Golfer's Elbow, Stress relief, Insomnia, and Weight-loss and Smoking Cessation.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

I was speaking to a person a while ago about Acupuncture, and she said that ‘Stabbing’ people seemed ‘very violent’. So, that conversation has prompted me to write this little article.
