Castration season is well under way - GET IT DONE BEFORE THE FLY SEASON!

Although a commonly performed surgery amongst equines, people sometimes overlook what major surgery it is and what problems can arise. Experience and good aseptic techniques are so important. Pain relief, adequate sedation and subsequent good husbandry are all essential for minimising the risks associated with castrations.

The two most common complications seen are swelling and infection and this is where the meticulous husbandry plays its part. Bleeding, scirrhous cords and gut herniation are less common, but are very much something owners need to be aware of. Tetanus cover is a must as the usually fatal disease can be avoided by vaccination or an antitoxin.

Most castrations are done under standing sedation, however older horses (due to greater blood supply to the area) undescended testicles and often minis (as the vets just can not reach) will be done under general anaesthetic.

If you would like to talk to one of our vets or to get your “boy” booked in please call 01787 703800 or if easier email reception@esequinevets.co.uk ☎️ ✉️

The first two foals of the season were born last weekend, beautiful healthy thoroughbreds bred by parks_farm_stud 🥰🐴

Both foalings were thankfully very straight
forward, and Pinafore did exceptionally well as first time mum, even foaling down at a very sociable hour, which is unusual for mares who often choose to foal down in the middle of the night.

FEI Vaccinations 🐴💉

As of January 2026, the digital registration of vaccination details will be enforced by the FEI. It is imperative that you let us know at the time of vaccination if your horse is FEI registered, and likely to be competing under FEI rules, as we have to upload the vaccination at the time of administering it.
