Having a professional massage can be a real treat. The idea of trying to massage yourself without any massage knowledge might seem pointless. Wrong!

There are simple and highly effective massage techniques you can practice at home on yourself to great effect.

Here’s a powerful end of the week relaxation technique that’s a great way to reduce stress in the body by stimulating the Vagus Nerve.

The Vagus Nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, extending from its roots in the cerebellum and brainstem and winding along pathways throughout the body as the central nerve of the Parasympathetic Nervous System that helps us to relax, rest and restore health. Terminating in multiple organs and able to affect and alter hormone secretion, good Vagus Nerve 'tone' and health can help to regulate sleep, reduce stress and improve digestion. Self massage is a highly effective type of stimulation we can give the Vagus Nerve to prompt a powerful "rest and digest" destress response in the body.

So how do you massage the Vagus Nerve? Here are some simple steps.

1. Find a place to sit or lie where you feel comfortable and able
to relax.
2. Apply massage oil to your hands and rub them together until
they feel nice and warm.
You can use olive oil or grapeseed oil from the supermarket.
Almond oil or coconut oil are other great alternatives. Add a
few drops of your favourite essential oil for a smell you love. A
good guide to the properties of oils can be found at
www.lovingessentialoils.com
3. Inhale deeply. Cup your hands to your nose breathing in and
out deeply and slowly.
4. Start to massage your neck. Begin at your clavicle (the bones
that protrude at the top of your breastbone and run towards
your shoulders) and gently massage in an upward motion
along the left side of your neck. Repeat on your right side.
Take time to move slowly, focussing on your hands and the
sensation of the movement over your skin.
5. Move to your ears. With two fingers, gently rub behind your
earlobes.
6. Bring your hands down to your chest and interlacing your
fingers. Move your interlaced fingers up behind your head
keeping your head facing forward and now move your gaze
entirely to the right. Keep your eyes looking over to the right
until you experience a sigh or a yawn or the desire to swallow.
Then repeat on the left side.

There’s a wealth of information out there about the Vagus Nerve if you’re interested and want to explore its fascinating role in human health and improved wellbeing.

Wishing you a relaxing end to a busy week.

Socrates said “The unexamined life is not worth living”. I'm not sure I agree with him entirely, but there is definitely merit and huge satisfaction in learning more about ourselves and experiencing life with greater depth, clarity and connection.

In the busyness of day-to-day tasks, one of the elements of life that can become less and less examined is our sense of ourselves, and our sense of comfort or discomfort in the body. We can just 'push on through' - through tiredness, pain, reluctance, sadness, injury.

Massage offers a unique possibility to re-engage with ourselves and our senses. Like dipping your fingers into a pool and sensing the cool water and gentle push and pull of the ripples, therapeutic touch allows us to observe and dive a little into ourselves, and connect with what is really alive and going on.

Using a range of massage techniques to stimulate and invigorate or soothe and calm, I work with clients to support a safe re-connection with their body in the here and now, and the cultivation of a kind and non-judgemental awareness of it's condition and needs.

It's good to make time for yourself, where you can.

Hello! My name is Lizzie Ashworth and I'm a qualified Swedish Massage therapist.

I trained in Swedish Massage Therapy with Scottish Massage Schools (www.scottishmassage.co.uk) and am passionate about the ability of massage to release tension, get in touch with the body and be part of a healing journey.

My approach is intuitive and connected, drawing upon fourteen years working in mental health, children’s rights and refugee support work, and creates an environment that feels welcoming and safe.

I integrate Swedish massage with Fascial Release techniques to help discharge tension in the body, promote healing and deeper body awareness for the client. Compassion, trust and integrity are essential elements of my practice in supporting individuals to reduce stress, find deep relaxation and improve their wellbeing.

With a commitment to inclusivity, diversity and equality, I support individuals of all backgrounds and orientations to feel valued and grounded. I am happy to work with new clients to explore how massage and fascial release can support improved emotional and physical health.

I am particularly interested in the benefits of massage for mental health and women's health. I am a keen runner, poet and illustrator, and enjoy playfulness and nature as key components of a happy life.
