It's a bright future for West Cross Community Centre now that their lights have been replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting. Made possible with contribution from our community budget, the new lighting is much more energy-efficient, cutting bills and carbon footprint.

The community centre is an essential hive of activity, home to everything from dance classes, table tennis, social groups and of course Mumbles Community Council's Friday Fun and Community Quiz. Keeping bills low means the Centre can keep the charges for hirers as low as possible, meaning the facility remains for the community.

As an extremely busy and successful community centre, switching to a more energy-efficient option helps more of the activities going on in West Cross reduce their carbon footprint.

I'm sure there's a joke somewhere about how many councillors it takes to change a light bulb... but in this case, changing the light bulb will make a big difference. Next time you're in West Cross Community Centre look up and see for yourself! 💡

It's an enormous honour to be on the Labour shortlist for Senedd 2026 candidates to represent Gŵyr Abertawe. I am really looking forward to speaking to as many Labour members as possible before they decide the final list of names that will make it onto the ballot paper.

I have an ambitious vision for Wales’ future: a Wales where all can thrive, together in a nation where we realise the strengths of our diversity. I want us to do more to create the conditions for people to live well, and for both people and planet to flourish.

I know first-hand the difference it makes to have diverse voices around the table. As parent of two young boys, I want to ensure parents, women, and children and young people are properly represented in our Parliament. I will bring my passion for a better, fairer world and my unique combination of ideas, skills, experience and energy in the service of the people of Wales, as part of a winning Welsh Labour team.

I will be contacting members in the coming weeks to introduce myself. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about how we tackle the issues facing Gŵyr Abertawe, and the whole of Wales. If you want to contact me, my details are below. Diolch o galon.

🗳 Put it in your diary - election day is this Thursday, 21st August, for the West Cross ward by election for Mumbles Community Council. Xanthe is brings ideas, energy and enthusiasm - I hope she gets your support!

Great to be out on the doorstep again, talking to residents this evening with the excellent Community Council candidate Xanthe Keeton. Thanks to all those who have already voted by post. If you're not one of them, don't forget election day is this Thursday, 21st August.

Xanthe has grown up in West Cross and has already shown her commitment to the area through her proactive volunteering. Residents describe her as approachable, dependable and able to connect with people of all ages - all of which make her a fantastic candidate. She is standing to make a difference locally, as she puts it, to help make West Cross a place you love as much as she does.

Weeding in the sun was hard work this afternoon, but so worth it. We made Alderwood Road and nearby parts of West Cross Lane much tidier and more pleasant for pedestrians. All while keeping West Cross streets bee-friendly. 🐝🌸

Great to see Community Council candidate Xanthe Keeton out with us litter picking again, as she usually is!

Next session will be early September, follow Mumbles Community Council Environmental to find out where and when. Hope you can join us!

🐝 Bee Friendly Streets – August Weeding Session 🌼

Our next community weeding session will be on:

📅 Monday 11th August
🕜 1:30pm
📍 Meet at Dick Barton’s

This month we’ll be tackling a short stretch of Alderwood Road up towards West Cross Lane, plus a few spots where plants are narrowing the footway at the corner of Alderwood Road and Mumbles Road, and along West Cross Lane.

Even with just a few volunteers, we can make a big difference to keeping our streets safer, cleaner, and more pollinator-friendly 🐝✨

🛠️ All equipment provided – just wear sturdy footwear and bring gardening gloves if you have them. Everyone welcome, even if you can only spare half an hour!

🌱 As part of Bee Friendly Streets, no chemical herbicides are used in West Cross and Mayals – so every bit of hand weeding really counts.

I'm thrilled the hugely dedicated and talented Xanthe Keeton is standing as the Labour candidate in the upcoming Mumbles Community Council by election. I first volunteered alongside Xanthe at a community event in West Cross when she was about 13 and she has been serving her community ever since. Many will know her from West Cross Warm Hub, Family Fun Days and the Community Quiz. She knows West Cross inside out, brings fresh ideas and endless commitment. But don't take my word for it..!

When we asked local residents what they thought about Xanthe standing for the community council, they told us:

"Xanthe has been an invaluable support and help at the warm hub and Halloween/Christmas parties that we have attended over the years. She has always been welcoming, warm and helpful. Xanthe shows how much she cares about our community through the work she does."

"Xanthe has been a massive asset to our community. She has thrown herself into many community events, from Halloween and Christmas parties to the community warm hub where she is greatly loved and respected by all ages. Xanthe has a special ability to communicate with, understand and encourage people of all ages to get involved."

"I was delighted to hear that Xanthe is standing in the local community council by election. I have known Xanthe for about 4 years since I started attending various events at West Cross Community Centre. She has volunteered throughout this period, is very friendly and dependable and has worked hard making everyone drinks and snacks. Her youth and enthusiasm will no doubt be an asset to the local community and the Labour Party."

Please vote for Xanthe Keeton on Thursday 21st August, or use your postal vote, which should arrive very soon. Leaflets with more information are being delivered across the ward as we speak.

Thanks to Maddy and the team at Transport for Wales Trafnidiaeth Cymru for listening to my feedback on behalf of residents to their proposed bus network when bus reform comes in.

🚍 South West Wales will be the first region of Wales where Bus Reform will be introduced in 2027. This marks a big change in how bus services will be commissioned and run. What you think really matters.

TfW are committed to involving communities and have arranged drop in sessions across the region.

Future events in the image attached, with the team in the Quadrant all day today and at Swansea bus station tomorrow morning (Friday).

Brilliant kick-off to Mumbles Community Council family fun days this morning. Proud to have provided 150 sandwiches with West Cross Caffi diverting all that bread from landfill to filling little tummies! Huge well done to the volunteers at the Caffi, and all involved at MCC, lots of happy families!
