We are feeling festive here at The Red House Dental Practice! And with that festive feeling comes the indulgence in Christmas goodies for a lot of us so it feels appropriate to share some advice to keep your teeth happy over the holiday period.
Everyone has plaque bacteria in their mouth and when this mixes with sugary foods and drinks, sugar acids are produced which can cause tooth decay. That’s why you should limit the amount and number of times you consume sugary snacks or drinks each day.
Treats such as Haribos, Jelly Tots, Jelly Babies, other jelly sweets, raisins and lolly pops are all foods that tend to be consumed over a period of time and not all at once. They can stick in teeth and cause long periods of sugar attacks, increasing the risk of tooth decay. A ‘SAFER’ treat would be to have something that is eaten all in one go for example a small bit of chocolate or a biscuit. These treats are cleared from the mouth a lot quicker.
Lots of drinks contain sugar too. It is always best to stick with water and milk. If a cordial is drank, then making up a sugar free drink very weakly would be advised. Cordials (even sugar free) can be highly acidic, adding to the risk of tooth wear and loss of enamel.
As well as keeping the volumes of treats down, it is best to keep our sugary treats to meal time too. Doing this reduces the frequency and number of sugar attacks on the teeth. Choose things like fruit, vegetable sticks, plain rice cakes or even a slice of wholemeal toast at snack times are healthier snack options.
Remember… by making these swaps you can help improve your dental health and help preserve the special gift of our teeth for many years to come!!
Should you have any problems over the holiday period, we are always here and happy to help.
