Chilblains - During Snowy Weather
With snow and freezing temperatures, the risk of chilblains increases significantly. Chilblains are an inflammatory condition triggered by prolonged exposure to cold, damp environments, followed by rapid re-warming. Snow, icy ground, and wet footwear place the feet at particular risk.
Clinical presentation includes:
• Red to purple discoloration of the toes or feet
• Localised swelling and tenderness
• Itching, burning, pain or blistering
Why snow increases risk:
• Prolonged cold exposure reduces peripheral circulation
• Wet socks and shoes accelerate heat loss
• Sudden warming indoors causes abnormal vascular response
Clinical advice during snowy conditions:
• Keep feet warm, dry, and well insulated
• Change damp socks immediately
• Avoid direct heat sources when re-warming
• Use emollients to protect skin integrity
• Wear properly fitting, weather-appropriate footwear
Persistent or worsening chilblains should be assessed to prevent secondary infection or complications.
