We are a small team consisting of three Occupational Therapists, one Technical Instructor, one Technical Engineer, and three Administrative staff. We contract the services of DGT to carry out maintenance, repairs, collections and deliveries of equipment. We are part of Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust (CHUFT). What do we do? We assess for and provide wheelchairs, accessories and

special seating to people who have a long term disability (expected to last six months or longer), requiring daily wheeled mobility. Where do we cover? We have approximately two and a half thousand wheelchair users of all ages, living in the Colchester and Tendring boroughs. We are funded by North East Essex NHS Clinical Commissioning Group. Access to Service

We accept new referrals from GPs, trained therapy staff, District nurses and Community Matrons through our secure e-mail address above. The form must be completed in full, in conjunction with the applicant, next of kin or carer. Clients already known to us, or their relatives, carers or health professionals, can contact us directly with new enquiries or requests without needing a new referral. We will ask if the client has given consent to do this where necessary. For any maintenance or repair issues with NHS wheelchairs please call DGT directly on 01245 468834. Eligibility criteria for equipment provision is set within a broad national framework and agreed between NEEWCS and the Clinical Commissioning Group. This takes into account local individual needs and resources. Assessment and waiting times

We aim to make contact and discuss new referrals or enquiries into our service within two working days of receipt. Face-to-face assessments are made from a waiting list which can take up to 18 weeks from initial contact but varies throughout the year, according to demand. Where clients are not deemed eligible for equipment we will work closely with them to provide the best advice on equipment and other local resources available to them.

This wonderful paediatric RGK Tilite high active user wheelchair was donated to us by a local family when their child had outgrown it. It had been privately purchased and wanted to know it could be used again as these are good strong chairs and we could see there was still life in it! Our volunteer technician, Craig, spent a few hours reconditioning the whole chair, then he took it up to the Guttmann Centre at Stoke Mandeville, where the Wheel Power sports team will ensure it is fitted for another sporty child!

We would like to introduce you to Claire, who is our lovely new full-time Admin.

Claire joined us last month and has very quickly settled in and become a member of the team.

When Claire isnโ€™t working she enjoys her holidays abroad, drinking the odd cocktail ๐Ÿน or two and reading a good book ๐Ÿ“•

What a great service to have

Did you know we have beach wheelchairs available to borrow in Clacton for free? ๐Ÿฆฝ ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Beach wheelchairs offer the chance to enjoy our award-winning coastline to those who might otherwise be unable to access them. With their wide wheels, these chairs glide over sand where regular wheelchairs would sink, allowing everyone to enjoy a day out to the beach! ๐ŸŒŠ

Both of our wheelchairs operate on a first come, first serve basis from our main station in Clacton - just next to Clacton Pier - and must be returned by 6pm on the day of use! ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Wheelchairs can only be borrowed when beach patrol are operating, we will be in Clacton every day from July 20th-September 1st!

Appreciation post :-)

"I would like to thank you and wheelchair service from the bottom of my heart. I was able to go out on Saturday with some of my friends to the Colchester football club and I was able to get around with so much comfort it was amazing, canโ€™t wait to plan more days out.
Today I went on the bus and with the chair going back, the barber was able to give me a better shave. Brilliant chair.
I canโ€™t thank you enough , honestly thank you so so much.
You have really honestly put a massive smile on my face and your amazing team to make this all possible for me."

We worked with the ICB to identify and fund the perfect powered wheelchair for Adam and these amazing photographs and words make it so worthwhile. Enjoy many more new experiences Adam from Tracy and the team.
