What Is the Cognitive Triangle?
Picture a triangle. On each corner, you’ve got one of three things: thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. So something happens—let’s say, a situation or a trigger—and it sets off one corner of the triangle. Maybe it starts with a thought, like, ‘I’m not good enough.’ That thought triggers a feeling, like sadness or shame. And that feeling leads to a behavior—maybe withdrawing, avoiding people, or not trying something new.

These three parts are always influencing each other. So, if you can change one corner of the triangle, you can start to shift the whole system.

One of the easiest ways to start working with the cognitive triangle is by looking at your thoughts. Why? Because our thoughts are like the narrators of our lives—they’re always running in the background, interpreting what’s happening around us.
Basically, when a circumstance occurs, it will cause one of them, such as a thought, to produce a feeling, which will then result in your behavior and action.

The more you practice, the stronger and more automatic those healthier habits and thoughts become. Over time, this can lead to improved emotional states and more balanced reactions to life’s challenges.
