Osteoporosis is painful condition affecting many worldwide. Women post menopause are particularly susceptible to osteoporosis as they lose the protective properties of oestrogen post menopause if not on HRT.
When I hit menopause I requested a DEXA Scan from my GP. Thankfully the results were very good as I was exercising actively and lifting weights at the time.
Last year I had a minor injury to my ankle and used the opportunity to have another DEXA scan this time privately as I was curious to know if I had maintained my bone density. There had been sparodic episodes with no exercise and certainly I was not lifting heavy weights as I used to neither was I on HRT at the time. Again thankfully my results were in good range. Phew!
What can you do to protect your bones?
Eat a health diet including quality protein, vegetable and fruits and nuts and seeds.
If you consume dairy eat quality dairy, good cheese, organic full fat milk, and grass fed butter.
Move your body and lift heavy weights.
Ensure your Vitamin D levels are optimal and if you supplement with vitamin D and especially calcium supplement with Vitamin K2 also to ensure the calcium goes into your bones!

The day your menstruation stopped. Many women dread the approach of the menopause in fact it is the time leading up to this day that is the challenge. Having said that if you have not been able to manage your symptoms well leading up to menopause it is likely that they will continue post menopause!
Some women look at menopause as a time for a reset and some as the end!
The truth is no matter which group you belong to there is so much that can be done to keep you healthy and thriving before, during and after menopause.
What is your journey?
We can all get stressed, put on weight, lose it again, suffer with skin and hormonal issues. But only women will go through menopause.
Isn't is great to be unique!

It's World Mental Health Day again. What comes to mind when you hear mental health? Do you find happy thoughts or sad thoughts going through your mind?

Sometimes, my clients get stuck for breakfast ideas. This is especially so when some foods need to be eliminated. My go-to solution is to think outside the box 📦 🤔
Have you tried eggs with leftover rice? Not only is it a delicious alternative to regular breakfast cereal or toast, but it is delicious.

Did you know there are health benefits associated with cooked then cooled rice (in the fridge 8-12 hrs) ?
👉 Cooling the rice in the fridge creates resistant starch. Resistant starch is not broken down in the small intestine like regular starch.It passes into the colon where it is fermented by gut bacteria.
👉 Resistant starch has a lower glycemic index. This means it has less of an impact on your blood sugar levels.
👉 This is important if you have type 2 diabetes and need to manage your blood sugar levels.
👉 The resistant starch is fermented in the gut, producing short chain fatty acids. These acids:
💥 Support gut barrier
💥 Have anti-inflammatory properties
💥 Regulate insulin sensitivity and immune function.

I jazzed up my scrambled eggs with peas 🫛 this morning to increase the protein content on my plate.
I like to start my day with protein rich foods as it suits me better.

High protein scrambled eggs;
1/4 red bell pepper - chopped
1 tbsp chopped red onion
1 small tomato 🍅 chopped
A crushed garlic if you like
A handful of frozen peas 🫛
2 eggs lightly beaten 🥚
S+P+ mild chilli powder
Olive 🫒 oil to cook with
Few sprigs of chopped fresh corriander

Sweat sweat onion, red pepper and peas for a couple minutes in olive oil, add onions, then s+p+chilli and pour over the eggs stir still cooked finishing with chopped corriander 🌿

Variation: Try with garlic, fresh minced ginger, and mild curry powder
Or tamari and mushrooms!

If you start your day with a protein breakfast, you are less likely to crave unhealthy foods later in the day.
I used eggs, ham, peppers, and onions for my high protein breakfast and served it with a salad garnish. 🥗
You, of course, can accompany it with a sourdough bread or rye bread if desired. Or how about a bowl of berries for a change?

FISH SALAD 🥗 😋 😍

I like to create many dishes from the same ingredients. It's not being lazy but rather practical.
Yesterday, I grilled some fresh mackerel and used the leftover to create a healthy salad 🥗 for my lunch.
I used beetroots and their stems that I braised a day before to put it together along with some cooked tenderstem broccoli 🥦
Lemon 🍋 juice, EVOO 🫒 & 🧂.
Simply delicious.
I have been eating a lot of beetroots lately. It helps my digestion in particular bile flow.

Feeling ravenously hungry come 1pm? You are not alone, I get this feeling, too, especially if I have been going off track from a healthy lifestyle for some time.
This is when a little meal preparation and meal planning comes in handy.
I love having cooked healthy food ready to go for lunch.
When you have healthy prepared ingredients ready to hand, you can put together a healthy lunch in a matter of minutes.
This plate is full of nutrients rich in antioxidants. It will help with balancing my blood sugar with fibre, protein, and healthy fats.
To dress the plate, I drizzled it with pomegranate molasses, chilli powder, 🧂 and pepper and fermented purple cabbage.
I chose chicken as my protein source for those on a vegetarian based diet. Try tofu, tempeh, cheese, or beans.
If you have healthy food ready and eat at regular times, you can get on top of your cravings.

Having a rather hot stopover in Antalya, Turkey 🇹🇷.
The Kale Içi is beautiful with lots of little souvenir shops and in the evening the streets come to life with fish restaurants and people dinning out.
I like the way they served our rocket salad with the dressing on the side with pomegranate molasses and EVOO. They eat a hefty serving of rocket with fish here. All very good for the liver.

Last sunset in Cyprus. It was a windy day at the beach. We had fish baked in salt and fish salad 🥗 made out of the head. This paired beautifully with boiled Cyprus potatoes made into salad with local red wine vinegar and local pickled caper stems.
It's the simple things in life that I keep coming back to.
