Thanks to everyone who has supported us as we prepare to swim a marathon to raise money for Alzheimer's Society . Here's a little update on our training progress:

We're both swimming a half marathon every other week in about 90 minutes (200 lengths.) We have also upped the distance of our regular 3 swims a week to 2 miles front crawl, half a mile with paddles, which builds strength, and a cool down of another 20 lengths. So in total we're both currently swimming about 50km a month.

The marathon is 10km but of course it's done in one go! This distance is the swimming equivalent of a 26.2 mile running marathon.

We have also upped our running on non swimming days, each running about 15k a week, plus some strength training at home.

Because of all this training we're finding ourselves extra hungry and are enjoying really yummy plant based food packed with goodness to keep us energised. We're also trying to make sleep a priority but we don't find that one so easy with our busy work life.

Hopefully we'll be ready for our swim in November and will raise a few more pounds for this good cause.

Thank you for your support πŸ™https://www.justgiving.com/page/flissandrod?utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=page%2Fflissandrod&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=pfp-share

Very sad news. Our thoughts and condolences to this gentleman's loved ones.

At 1.40pm on Tuesday 26th March, emergency services were called to attend a crash involving a light aircraft at IWM Duxford. We are sad to report that the pilot, a man in his 50s from the Bedfordshire area, did not survive the crash. Despite the best efforts of medical crews, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Cambridgeshire Police have informed next of kin, who attended the scene of the accident yesterday.

The aircraft was a privately-owned General Aviation Cirrus SR22, based at Duxford. There were no other passengers. Police have now passed the investigation over to the Air Accident Investigation Branch, who remain on site at Duxford.

IWM Duxford will be closed to the public on Wednesday and Thursday. We expect to reopen on Friday. We have no further information to share at this time.

We do a LOT of miles each month to visit all our wonderful clients, but yesterday we spent the day with our closest client at North Weald airfield, just a stones throw from our office in North Weald village. Everyone reported that they had a great day talking about human performance and human factors!
Thanks for the very warm welcome πŸ€— The Squadron Aero Legends

Big thanks to for taking care of me when I scalded my leg on my own cup of tea just before starting their Human Factors training last week πŸ™ˆ

In particular, two of the twelve Error Management principles written by James Reason come up time and time again in my classes. These are:

1. "Human error is both universal and inevitable."

2. "You can not change the human condition, but you can change the conditions in which humans work"

These two statements couldn't have been more true in that moment!!

Without thinking of the consequences, I had placed my fairly sturdy bag containing my thermos cup of freshly brewed hot tea onto a chair, but the bag toppled over. The travel cup hit the floor, the lid popped off and the tea splashed up my legs, into my face, and all over the carpet! Being that I was at ACSAI's office I was most embarrassed about the carpet!! (It was green tea so hopefully it hasn't stained 🀞)

I had to deliver the training with an ice pack on my legs πŸ™ˆπŸ˜…

It was a great reminder that even Human Factors experts do silly things from time to time! None of us are immune. Human fallibility can be reduced by learning about "being human", but never fully eliminated. That's where Error / Safety Management comes in. We have to set people up to succeed.

It was a good reminder of those famous words by Professor James Reason, and despite the embarrassment and pain, it gave us a funny way to discuss the limitations of humans!

I always enjoy the playful micky taking that takes place whenever I do something "human" at work πŸ˜… 😊

A great three days / nights with GE Aerospace On Wing Support at LHR and STN getting everyone up to speed with Safety Management Systems.

Look at the snazzy room we used for the night shift at Stansted's training last night!! We felt like we were having a party whilst we discussed airworthiness!!

Such powerful words. In January, many of us will naturally be reflecting on the past year, and the one to come.

What things have made you unhappy recently? What things have made you anxious, or angry, ashamed, or made you feel stuck or unwell?

Can you change these things? If you can't physically change them, you can still change the way you think about them.

The mind is extremely powerful. What we tell ourselves, we believe. Our thoughts drive our feelings, which drive our actions, and our actions ultimately create the life we experience.

So change a situation if you can, by all means. But if you choose not to bring change, or can't change things, please do try to look for the positives. Sometimes acceptance is the only solution for the time being. There are no mistakes, only lessons.

It takes conscious effort but our health and wellness really does rely on our ability to look inside and then either change or accept the things we don't feel comfortable with.

Do you notice the patterns in your thoughts and behaviour? How might you start looking for them if not? How might you take a more gentle and kind attitude towards yourself? It is unlikely that you would judge a loved one as harshly as you judge yourself. So please be kind to yourself.

In January, as I rest whilst the earth is still, l'm tuning in and asking myself what changes I might need to make for my own health and happiness.

What are you hoping to change or feel acceptance of in 2024?
