Acupuncture Family Clinic Children’s and woman’s health. Fertility, pregnancy, gynaecology and paediatric acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine is greatly respected throughout the world for its sophisticated diagnosis procedures. Just as is the case with Western Scientific Medicine, Acupuncture seeks to correct disorders in the body by stimulation of specific points through the use of needles, pressure and magnets. There are 361 acupuncture points located throughout the body on meridians. Meridians are the ene

rgetic channels that connect all the points to each other. These points are stimulated by various means to produce a physiological effect on the body. All points have various functions throughout the body that can be used to treat different diseases.ne, a correct diagnosis is paramount to successful treatment.Diagnosis in Traditional Medicine is both rational and logical. The 'signs and symptoms' are never seen as isolated events but as part of a greater disharmony. Acupuncture has existed as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years and yet is one of the most popular complementary therapies in the West. Acupuncture involves the insertion of 'hair fine needles' into certain locations to stimulate the body's healing energy or 'Qi'. This energy underlies the balanced functioning in the body and when it becomes blocked or deficient one become unhealthy. The points of insertion are carefully chosen in order to disperse any blockages and to bring the Qi into a better balance. The more this balance is achieved and maintained, the healthier one becomes.

TCM Treatment for IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the digestive system. The exact cause is unknown – it’s been linked to things like food passing through your gut too quickly or too slowly, oversensitive nerves in your gut, stress and a family history of IBS. However, TCM treatment for IBS may be very effective…

Hayfever and Allergy Season: TCM Treatment

It’s that time of the year that allergy sufferers dread. For many, the pollen season can be a miserable time having to deal with seasonal allergies and the symptoms they cause.

Hayfever is driven by antibodies to specific pollens. When pollen enters the eyes, nose or throat-cause a series of reactions leading to our mast cells releasing histamine, which causes a lot of unpleasant symptoms like sneezing and itching.

According to TCM theory, hayfever is usually attributed to a deficiency of Qi and an invasion of Wind-Heat in the Lungs. Due to the deficiency, the body is susceptible to environmental pathological factors such as wind and cold, which cause a running and blocking of the nose, itchy eyes and nose, and swollen and irritated sinuses.

Patients are able to book a treatment with acupuncturist and take herbal formulas and mushrooms to help offer relief for those suffering from hayfever and allergies.

Endometriosis Awareness: TCM Treatment

March is Endometriosis Month, and it aims to raise awareness about the hidden, and often unrecognized condition.

ENDOMETRIOSIS AWARENESS
Endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects a woman’s reproductive organs. It happens when the lining cells of the uterus (called the endometrium) grow outside of it. In the UK, around 1.5 million women are currently living with the condition, and it can affect individuals at any age – from puberty to menopause.

Symptoms of endometriosis include:

Painful menstruation
Pain during sexual in*******se
Chronic pelvic pain
Heavy or irregular menstruation
Pelvic bloating (from endometriotic cysts or enlarged womb)
Subfertility
Bowel-related symptoms during menstruation such as painful bowel movements, diarrhoea and constipation
Urinary-related symptoms during menstruation such as painful urination and bloody urination

ENDOMETRIOSIS: TCM PERSPECTIVE
According to the theories of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), endometriosis is known as “menstrual pain” due to its symptoms. TCM describes endometriosis as a blood stasis syndrome with a formation of abdominal lumps. Blood stasis is a condition where small vessels are not capable of carrying blood flow normally. It is the cause of severe pain, especially in the lower abdomen during your menstruation, and is believed to be responsible for cases of excessive menstrual bleeding and infertility.

Endometriosis can be a difficult condition to deal with, both physically and emotionally. When assisting endometriosis with herbal remedies, it is mainly to focus on blood stasis and kidney yang deficiency. Blood stasis is said to be related to a stagnant qi (which restricts blood circulation), and kidney yang deficiency (which affects metabolism).

Endometriosis is a complex condition and although there is no cure, Chinese medicine may be able to assist the condition.

I am qualified as Chinese herbalist and love combining herbs with my acupuncture treatments! Taking these two herbal courses was the best thing I have done during the Covid lockdowns. Now herbs are a part of my daily life and work. My patients give me great feedback after using herbal formulas, and these are suitable for both adults and kids.

Another case of alopecia treated with acupuncture.

This teenage girl has lost most of her hair that was gradually falling out over the year. She has had a number of other possible treatments through western and alternative medicine and these have failed to bring any change. She was continuing to loose hair and her self esteem, and it was a very hard time for her and the family.

She was brought to my clinic for acupuncture treatments as a last resort to try to help her. Through questioning her general health and body systems, I realised that her irregular and extremely painful periods were also part of the problem. Here we began this joint journey. I have put all my knowledge and expertise to regulate her body through means of Chinese medicine.

As acupuncture concentrates on treating the whole body, within 9 months of treatments, we manage to get the hair growing again, regulate periods with no pain and put her self esteem back on truck. She became energetic and jolly girl, enjoying her teenage time again.

What a better outcome we could’ve imagined.

Sadly I get more and more enquiries for treating alopecia in children. Symptoms range from small bold patches to almost complete bolding of the head.

This is very frustrating for most parents and their children, as it makes an impact on their social acceptance between friends and family.

From western medicine point of view, extensive blood tests are done to rule out possible reasons for this autoimmune response, but in many cases no particular cause is found. Steroid product are prescribed to slow down the process, which show improvement for as long as they are used. Unfortunately this way is not bringing cure, but just masking the problem.

Good news are, that paediatric acupuncture look into autoimmune disease as a manifestation of internal imbalance. Acupuncture is looking at the body as a whole in order to find the root of the problem and concentrate on treating the root rather than symptoms. Alopecia is known to respond very well to acupuncture treatments in adults and children. It is amazing to see how well children respond to these treatments within just few weeks.

Super brave 9 year old girl was brought for a treatment due to chronic sinuses she’s been suffering with for over a year now. Not only blocked nose was bothering her, but also repeated ear infections for which she was treated with antibiotics every few weeks.

Very often at my clinic, I see children who suffer with repeated infections, where use of antibiotics are unable to treat the problem, and also lead to weakening their immune system and gut flora, making it even harder for the body to deal with pathogens.

At most cases, once the acupuncture course of treatments started, children aren’t getting another outbreak of the infection. These treatments help the body to throw out the pathogen, strengthen immune system and recover gut flora. With these treatments, they also become more robust, their energy levels and appetite get improved.

And the best thing is as usual happy children means happy parents.

After several infections and few sets of antibiotics this girl had no appetite and was opening her bowels only once in 3-4 days.

No appetite, meaning that she didn’t like the taste of any normal food and she would not put any sort of protein in her mouth.

Her parents were worried, but their GP assured them that she is still within normal hight/weight for her age and advised to wait.

Wait??? For a parent to see their child eating nothing, just a bit of bread a day, was very frustrating.

Luckily they brought their daughter for paediatric acupuncture and within just few sessions once a week, she is happy to try and eat new things every day, and opening bowels almost every day.

‘She’s shouting YUMM every time she bites on the schnitzel!!!’

That what I mean happy children - happy parents.

Acupuncture for Migraines

Migraine Awareness Week 2021 is a campaign to spread awareness on the treatment of migraines from 5th – 11th September.

Migraine is a common health condition, affecting around 1 in every 5 women and around 1 in every 15 men. They usually begin in early adulthood and can be extremely debilitating. However, Chinese medicine may be able to get to the root of the problem.

According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture has been proved through controlled trials, to be an effective treatment for headache.

Studies suggest that acupuncture can reduce the frequency of headache in people suffering from migraines. People who receive acupuncture experience a reduction in migraine days, frequency, and intensity.

Some headache specialists believe that acupuncture should be the first choice of treatment for migraines.

Did you know that colour of your period blood matters when you come to see an acupuncturist for complaints around menstrual irregularities or need help with fertility?

I am seeing a lot of girls and women to help them to establish healthy regular periods, for example heavy bleeds, period pains, or irregular bleeding.

That’s not all! Regular periods and healthy menstrual cycle are very important in order to fall pregnant naturally. In many cases it is enough to just regulate the cycle with acupuncture treatments for a woman to get pregnant, without need of going for heavy artificial reproductive therapy like IVF.

Drop me a line if you would like to benefit from acupuncture or have any questions

Chinese Herbal Homemade Broth Recipe

If you start to feel unwell and begin to experience cold, flu or even COVID symptoms, you might seek home remedies to help you manage the symptoms. Home remedies may be effective at helping to treat the symptoms. Many Chinese herbs can be used for cooking, as well as for medicinal purposes. Dr YouJun Wang, Chairman of the Academic Committee of the FTCMP, has developed a healthy broth recipe for you to try at home if you are feeling unwell.

The broth recipe has been developed to help with coldness, fever, headaches, blocked nose, runny nose, muscular pain, dry/ sore throat or to help calm the stomach.

If you are suffering from the following symptoms, the soup may be beneficial for you:

Headache
Fever
Chills
Muscular aches
Tiredness
Dry and sore throat
Poor appetite
Nausea

METHOD:
Preparing the ingredients:

4 spring onions (Cong Bai) or 1 large leek
1 large piece of ginger (Sheng Jiang)
White or black ground pepper (Hu Jiao)
Tangerine peel (Chen Pi) – optional
Garlic – optional

You will need 4 spring onions or the stem of a leek – it is recommended to keep the hair roots and wash them clean. Cut off the green leaves and cut the spring onion stems into halves or cut the leeks into quarters longways.
Wash the ginger and keep the skin on then cut it into 5 slices.
Making the soup:

Put the ingredients into a pan and add one and a half cups of cold water and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes until there is around one cup of liquid left. Sprinkle a pinch of white or black ground pepper, stir and stop cooking.
For the best results, drink the soup when it is warm then rest in bed under the covers. It is beneficial to stay warm and sweat lightly. Try not to get cold as it may worsen the condition.
If you drink the soup on an empty stomach, add some sugar or honey for a further boost.
If you have a cough, add some tangerine peel to the soup and add some honey, but not sugar. Sip it warm like a cup of tea.

Ensure your cupboards are always stocked with the above ingredients to make the broth when you are feeling unwell. Feel free to share the method with friends, family, and patients.
