Hi! šŸ‘‹šŸ¼ My name’s Sue and I’ve been a midwife for 19 years, through which I’ve seen plenty of changes. By far the best one has been the introduction of Continuity of Care. It is offering an alternative to the traditional model where we can build a supportive relationship with women and their families. It is lovely to get to know the ladies we will be looking after in labour - their worries and their fears, their hopes and their stories.

Ruby is an awesome team, but so is the whole of Worcester maternity, and I’m privileged to be part of such an excellent group of people whose understanding and respect for each other is inspiring.

I’m currently trying to learn Spanish for fun, but Duolingo is somewhat despairing of my commitment and accent! ā¤ļø

Hi šŸ‘‹šŸ¼ My name’s Ash, I trained at the University of Worcester, and I’m the newest member of the Ruby Team.

What I love most about Continuity of Care is meeting someone exactly where they are when growing their family - listening to what they’re thinking and how they’re feeling, then providing care for the whole journey. Being welcomed into someone’s home at such an important time is a privilege. And I agree with Jo - our toddler helpers are a joy! Maybe the Ruby Team are secretly recruiting the next generation of midwives?!

My midwifery passion is advocating for more inclusive care. Since qualifying, I’ve co-authored an article on improving the language we use, presented at different universities on diversifying infant feeding support, produced a ā€œbest practiceā€ surrogacy guide, and written a textbook chapter on caring for LGBTQ+ families experiencing pregnancy loss.

In my free time, you’ll find me at the gym failing to get hench, with my family walking our dogs, or speaking truths that sometimes rhyme on a poetry open mic! ā¤ļø

Hi šŸ‘‹šŸ» My name’s Georgia. I’ve been a midwife for almost 4 years and just under 3 of those years have been spent as a Ruby midwife.

I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite part about being a continuity midwife - it is just the best! The relationships we build with families and beyond is what really makes it. I love having ā€œreturning customersā€ come back to me for their next pregnancies and watching their families grow is lovely.

In my spare time you’ll probably find me at the gym (sometimes with Jo throwing punches in boxercise classes!) or on holiday making the most of my annual leave!

ā¤ļø Introducing your Ruby Team
midwives!

Hi! šŸ‘‹šŸ¼ My name’s Jo, I’ve been a midwife for three years, and I’ve been with Ruby the whole time.

I love the relationship building over the pregnancy period and seeing their smile when you attend for their birth… However I find it hard to say goodbye after the postnatal period. I love returning families who feel they are part of the Ruby family.

My favourite part of the job is our little sibling ā€˜helpers’ who are encouraged to get involved in their care - especially when they pull out their own doctor kits!

In my spare time, I try to keep updated with the meanings of the strange words used by my teenage sons. I love boxing, golfing, and I’m a bit of a geek with a rubix cube!

One of my favourite outings is our socials with my Ruby team - dancing with Sue especially! 🪩

ā¤ļø Introducing your Ruby Team midwives!

Hi šŸ‘‹šŸ¼ My name’s Grace and I joined the Ruby Team in January. I trained at Keele University where I developed a real passion for personalised care and building strong relationships with families. One of the things I love most about working in a continuity team is the chance to support people throughout their entire pregnancy journey – from the early days right through to birth and beyond. It’s such a privilege to be part of those important moments and to really get to know the families I care for.

In my spare time, I love baking – especially cakes! I’m always on the lookout for new recipes to try, and I find it’s a great way to relax and unwind.

šŸŒŽ Today is the Global Day of Parents

This year’s theme is ā€œRaising Parentsā€, highlighting an important but often underappreciated reality - parenting is a skill. For first-time parents, experienced parents, solo parents, co-parents, bereaved parents, unexpected parents… Time, resources, and support are all needed.

As Continuity of Care midwives, we work to provide personalised care and support in pregnancy, birth, and those early days, however you’re transitioning to parenthood ā¤ļø

šŸ“ž Contact details if you’re receiving care from the Ruby Team

ā¤ļø For non-urgent advice, please contact your named midwife. You’ll already be in touch but if you need to find their number again, it’s in your Badger Notes app. They’ll get back to you on their next working day.

ā¤ļø If you think you’re in labour, or need to speak to a midwife and your midwife isn’t working, please call the Ruby on-call number - 01905 760099.

ā¤ļø If you’re over 16 weeks pregnant and need urgent advice, including noticing a change in baby’s movements, please call maternity triage - 01905 733196.

When pregnant, common reasons for calling triage are changes in changes in the pattern of baby’s movements, you think your waters have broken, vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, feeling very unwell, severe headaches or visual disturbances, sudden itching on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet, and pain, redness or swelling in your legs.

Common reasons for calling triage after baby is born include raised blood pressure, fever, heavy bleeding, feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms, excessive pain or concerns about perineal stitches or caesarean wound.

These lists don’t cover everything. If you have any other concerns or you are unsure, don’t hesitate to call for advice.

We are unable to see babies who are unwell in maternity triage. If you have non-urgent concerns regarding your newborn baby, contact your named midwife, the Ruby on-call number, GP or out-of-hours 111. For urgent concerns, go to Worcestershire Royal A&E or dial 999.

ā¤ļø If you are less than 16 weeks pregnant and have a concern about your pregnancy, then contact your GP. They will be able to refer you to our early pregnancy unit if required. Out of hours, please call 111, or for urgent concerns such as heavy bleeding or severe pain, go to A&E or dial 999.

šŸ’ for University of Worcester’s Midwifery Society! They hosted a fun day of learning and togetherness to celebrate this year’s International Day of the Midwife. Ruby Team’s midwife Ash spoke about caring for LGBTQ+ families. They were on the line-up with midwives Illiyin Morrison (who you might recognise from the Great British Bake Off!) who spoke about birth trauma, Sheena Byrom sharing about her life and distinguished career, Anna Byrom who focused on compassionate care and leadership, and Amina Norat broadening horizons with midwifery abroad and global perspectives.

This, plus a workshop on hypnobirthing, a raffle with lots of generously donated prizes, and a cake sale fundraised for three charities who work hard to support families locally and nationally.

Congratulations and all our student midwives and lecturers who supported on such a successful day! ā¤ļø
