Can Karen keep up with Kelly's quick pocket charting? 🤣
Our hygienists carry out regular periodontal pocket charting for those patients with gum/periodontal disease as part of their periodontal disease treatment plan.
They aren't just random numbers being called out but in fact pocket depths in millimeters.
Gum pockets are essentially gaps between the teeth and gums where bacteria and plaque can accumulate. Healthy gums fit snugly around the teeth, creating a natural barrier against bacteria. However, when gum disease progresses, the gums can detach from the teeth, forming these pockets.
For each tooth we measure six specific points around the tooth using a specialised probe, providing a comprehensive view of gum health. This detailed assessment helps dentists and hygienists identify areas of deeper pockets, assess the severity of periodontal disease, and determine appropriate treatment plans. Other indices may also be recorded such as bleeding, any tooth mobility and presence of infection.
The chart is used to track changes in pocket depths over time, helping to assess the effectiveness of treatment and monitor gum health.
