Happy International Yoga Day!

Whats the difference between Yoga Nidra, Meditation and Sleep?

On International Yoga Day, which coincides with the Summer Solstice (the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere), we're reminded of the light within us and the power of deep rest.

While many of us rely on sleep for rest and recovery, Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep, offers a unique state of conscious relaxation that differs profoundly from ordinary sleep.

Yoga Nidra is practiced lying in Savasana (a lying down rest pose), where a guided meditation takes you through stages of body awareness, breath focus, and visualisation. Unlike regular sleep, where consciousness fades, Yoga Nidra maintains a state of awareness between waking and sleeping. It’s often described as a “conscious sleep” where the body rests deeply, yet the mind remains quietly alert.

This ancient practice can help manage stress, improve sleep quality, and cultivate emotional clarity. Studies show that even 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra may equal the restfulness of hours of sleep, which makes it a powerful complement, especially during seasons of increased daylight and activity.

As the Summer Solstice gifts us more light and energy, Yoga Nidra invites us to balance that with intentional stillness. Just as nature cycles through light and dark, our bodies and minds benefit from both dynamic action and deep rest. On this symbolic day of sun and renewal, Yoga Nidra offers a gentle yet transformative way to reconnect, recharge, and restore, not by escaping awareness, but by embracing it fully.

This day is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, and it’s the perfect time to honour light, renewal, and the practice of yoga. Each year, International Yoga Day shines a light on the amazing benefits yoga brings for mind, body and community. Millions of people all over the world celebrate International Day of Yoga.

This year’s theme is ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’, which is a beautiful reminder that by caring for ourselves, we’re also nurturing the world around us.

Yoga with Atim is a moving, mindfulness, meditation style of Hatha yoga. It is a slow flowing, or vinyasa, yoga practice that is great for calming the mind, strengthening the body and improving your flexibility, posture and balance. Each yoga video often ends with a guided, mindfulness meditation.

You can try out a selection of yoga videos for your home practice. Remember to only do what feels comfortable for your body. Breathe mindfully, move slowly and smile. Breathing mindfully means breathing through the nose; feeling the breath against the nose; and keeping the breath peaceful, even, gentle and calm. If you have any health concerns or haven’t done any exercise for a while, please check with your doctor for advice before doing any yoga. Please note, the yoga videos are not recommended during pregnancy.
