Alcohol Awareness Week: What’s Really in Your Glass?

Did you know alcohol can quietly sabotage your health goals?

➡️ A large glass of wine can have as many calories as a slice of cake.
➡️ Drinking can trigger cravings and make it harder to stick to healthy habits.
➡️ It can disrupt sleep, slow your metabolism, and hold you back from reaching your goals whether that’s losing weight or quitting smoking.

This Alcohol Awareness Week, take a moment to reflect on your drinking habits. Even small changes can make a big difference. Thinking of cutting down? We’re here to support your journey to better health whether you’re managing your weight, stopping smoking, or both.

As we mark Alcohol Awareness Week 2025 let’s talk honestly about how alcohol impacts our working lives.

Many of us feel the pressure of long hours high expectations and constant deadlines and turning to alcohol might seem like a way to relax. But what starts to unwind can gradually affect sleep concentration and emotional wellbeing.

These changes may not be obvious straight away but over time they can reduce productivity and increase stress. Instead of relying on a drink to cope try exploring healthier habits that leave you feeling clear headed and ready for the day ahead 🧘‍♂️📅🍷

It’s easy to underestimate how much that “one or two drinks” after work can affect us. Over time, even moderate drinking can interfere with how well we sleep, how focused we feel the next day, and how we manage stress or communicate with others at work.

During Alcohol Awareness Week 2025, we’re highlighting how alcohol and work are more connected than many people realise. Whether you’re an employee, manager or business owner, it’s important to reflect on how drinking habits both inside and outside working hours, might be impacting workplace wellbeing and performance.

By raising awareness and talking more openly, we can support healthier choices, reduce stigma, and promote balance and wellbeing across every kind of workplace. 🍷💼🧠

Rachel's health journey began when chronic joint and back pain led her to see a rheumatologist. The advice was clear - she needed to lose weight. But it was a visit to her GP that truly changed things. He told her she was just one point away from being diabetic. Shocked, she was referred to ABL Health and decided it was time to take control.

Mobility was a daily struggle, and her weight was making it worse. Although she'd become less active over the years, her eating habits remained the same
- large portions, frequent snacking, and too many carbohydrates. Her short-term goal was to stay out of the diabetic range. Long-term, she aimed to lose one pound a week - 52 pounds in a year. She did even better, losing 23 kilos (over 50 pounds), and turning her health around.

The key to her success was following the easy plate method. She focused on vegetables, protein, and smaller portions of carbs. She stopped snacking at odd hours and became far more mindful about her food choices. The changes made a big difference - she could move more easily, felt less breathless, and her clothes became loose. She dropped from a size 26 to a size 18.

One evening, while out for a meal, a friend didn't recognise her. "Rachel! Is that you? You're disappearing!" That moment showed just how far she'd come.

Her message to others thinking about joining the programme? "You've got nothing to lose, but so much to gain. Give it a go - it can change your life. You just have to believe."

National Diet and Nutrition Survey 2019 to 2023: Key Findings

Fruit & Veg: Fewer than 1 in 10 children (11–18) and less than 1 in 5 adults meet the 5-a-day recommendation. This may reflect reduced availability during the COVID-19 pandemic and cost of living pressures.

Red & Processed Meat: 25% of men consumed over 90g/day, exceeding the recommended 70g/day.

Saturated Fat: 85% of children and 82% of adults exceeded the recommended 10% energy from saturated fat.

Sugary Drinks: Children (11–18) had the highest average consumption (124ml/day). High consumers drank up to 606ml/day—nearly 2 cans.

Free Sugars: Less than 1 in 10 children and 1 in 5 adults met the recommended maximum of 5% energy from free sugars. Girls aged 11–18 consumed the most (12%).

Fibre: 96% of children (11–18) and adults didn’t meet fibre recommendations. For younger children, 78–86% fell short of age-specific targets.

Vitamin D: 18% of adults (19–64) and 23% of children (11–18) were vitamin D deficient. In winter, this rose to 31% and 36% respectively.

Folate: 83% of women aged 16–49 had low folate, increasing risk of neural tube defects. With 1 in 6 pregnancies unplanned, this is a concern.

Fast Food/Takeaways: 72% of people bought food/drink from cafés, pubs, or takeaways in the last week. Among 11–18s, this rose to 81%. Over half recorded at least one eating occasion from out-of-home sources, contributing 23% of energy intake—including saturated fat, sugars, and sodium.

At ABL Health, we tackle all these topics and work with our clients to improve their nutritional intake and move more. We recognise that more needs to be done and will continue to support our clients in achieving a healthier diet and lifestyle.

🚭 Changes to disposable vapes 🚭
Big changes have happened. The government has banned the sale of disposable vapes. No shops should be selling them (which took effect on May 31st) from June 2025.

⚠ We know lots of people use these, but shops are not allowed to sell them anymore.

💬 Why?
Because they can harm young people and create a lot of waste. They are also now a major cause of litter.

💡 What does this mean for you?
If you’re using vapes to help stop smoking, don’t worry — there are still safe ways to get support. Talk to your advisor. We can help with other options like refillable vapes, ni****ne patches or lozenges.

❓ Got questions? Speak to your stop smoking team — we’re here to help.

At one of the lowest points in his life, JP knew something had to change. His weight, low mood, and constant concern over his knee were beginning to take a toll on his daily activities and overall wellbeing. Referred to a physiotherapist, JP began to rebuild his mobility - a turning point that allowed him to take the next step and join ABL's physical activity sessions.

With support from his Health and Lifestyle Advisor (HLA), JP tackled several personal barriers, including a lack of nutritional knowledge, poor meal planning, and a tendency to blame obstacles rather than adapt. The guidance he received helped him shift his mindset, empowering him to make smarter food choices and build lasting habits.

SMART goal setting became a powerful tool in JP's journey. Understanding how to evaluate and track progress gave him focus and momentum. His motivation steadily increased, and the changes began to show - not only on the scales but in his daily life. To date, JP has lost an impressive 22.2kg.

One of the most rewarding outcomes has been regaining the energy to spend quality time with his young son, often out on their bikes together. His self-confidence has flourished, and he's now a regular at his local gym - a far cry from where he started.

🚭 Va**ng: What you need to know 🚭
👉 If you don’t smoke — don’t start va**ng.
👉 Va**ng should only be used as a tool to help people stop smoking.

Once you have quit smoking successfully the behavioural support you have received will help you reduce and quit va**ng. Vapes should not be used for longer than 2 years

From 1 June 2025, you can now only buy refillable vapes — disposable vapes have been banned in England.
✅ At ABL Health, we sometimes use refillable vapes as part of a safe quit plan for people trying to stop smoking.
✅ The vapes we give out are properly checked, safe, and have passed strict Trading Standards tests.
✅ Some vapes sold in shops (especially before the ban) were not always safe — they sometimes had much more ni****ne than the label said, which made it harder for people to stop.

💬 If you want help to quit smoking, we can work with you to find the safest option that works for you. Your health matters. We’re here to help you live Healthier, Happier for Longer ❤️
