Only 44 hours until our director and skipper attempts a massive 150km run on the north and south banks of the Humber, to raise funds for our Full Families programme. A HUGE thank you to the organisations that have sponsored the run, and to those that have generously given already. Please, keep sharing, keep talking about it, and pop and give Danny some support this Thursday.

We will be sharing his progress on social media throughout the day, so keep an eye out! THANK YOU!

A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized room where patients breathe 100% oxygen at a specific atmospheric pressure (2.4ATA) for a designated amount of time. This allows arterial oxygen to reach up to 2000 mmHg. It is well known for treating deep-sea divers and scuba divers who have been affected by decompression sickness or “the bends”. However, did you know that it is approved to treat a variety of other health conditions? The FDA have currently approved 14 conditions including anemia, burns, non-healing wounds and diabetic foot ulcers.

Fibromyalgia is a long term condition that causes pain all over the body. The symptoms of fibromyalgia can fluctuate and can often suddenly improve or decline. It can involve symptoms such as muscle stiffness, increased sensitivity to pain, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, headaches and cognitive impairments. HBOT has been shown to be an effective and safe means of treating various symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Research that has focused on patients with fibromyalgia have found a good relationship between physiological improvements and changes in brain functionality in addition to improvement in pain, fatigue, anxiety and self-reported health status.
Furthermore, studies which have looked at post stroke patients and traumatic brain injury patients have found that HBOT can induce neuroplasticity and significant anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, leading to an increase in cognitive function and alleviation of pain through the reduction of inflammatory mediators.

Long covid is a common condition, with an estimated 10-20% of people diagnosed with covid to go on to develop long covid symptoms. The symptoms associated with long covid are varied including ‘brain fog’, breathlessness, fatigue, cough, anxiety, and depression. Some symptoms, such as fatigue, can be so bad that it prevents people from being able to carry out usual day to day activities.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a holistic therapy which involves breathing 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. When the chamber is pressurized to greater than normal air pressure it allows the body to take on more oxygen and deliver oxygen rich plasma to areas of the body which are not getting an adequate supply at baseline. It promotes the growth of new blood vessels, increases the body’s ability to kill certain bacteria and lessens the effect of inflammation and re-perfusion injury. It is often used for things such as non-healing chronic wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness to name a few.
HBOT has previously been shown as an effective and safe treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome. A study completed at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust found the severity of symptoms relating to long covid can be profound on an individual. HBOT as a therapeutic intervention was able to improve overall fatigue and cognitive function in those that participated in the study.

👉🏽

Long story short my body can’t really feel temperature properly especially my hands. Been working hard on them plus the hyperbaric oxygen treatment and finally after 14 months I can feel how hot my daughter makes my coffee 😅Absolutely buzzing ...nek minute back on the pitch with the bros 👀 haha dreams are free but grateful for the new upgrade in this spinal cord game 🙏🏽.

COVID-19 has had a major impact on all of us. Changing the way we work, commute, socialise and in the worst case having an effect on yours or someone you knows health. Oxygen is breathed in through the air and passes through the alveoli (in the lungs) into the blood which then circulates around the body. It is where blood exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide through the process of breathing in and out. When someone has COVID-19 pneumonia it results in the alveolar becoming inflamed and may result in progressive hypoxemia.

5 cases of severe COVID-19 were successfully treated in General Hospital of the Yangtze Rover Shipping (Wuhan) with HBOT. The treatment protocol involved one session a day and the chamber was compressed to 2.0 ATA for one patient and 1.6 ATA for the others. Initial session lasted 90 minutes at depth with subsequent sessions lasting 60 minutes.

They suggested that early additional HBOT in severe and critically ill patients with COVID-19 can stop the patient’s condition deteriorating and could reduce mortality. HBOT does this by improving immune function, systemic tissue perfusion and oxygen supply.

*We are a small independently run chamber who want to protect all our clients, old and new. This means that at our centre we do not offer HBOT to anyone who has COVID-19 or has been in contact with someone with COVID-19. However, we do offer help in those who are suffering with long term side effects which are a result of coronavirus (we just need to see a negative test result first to confirm you are able to attend).

A study completed in 2016 showed that breast cancer patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy due to late radiation induced tissue toxicity (LRITT) significantly improved on all domains on the breast cancer disease specific quality of life questionnaire (QLQ-BR23). In addition to this numerical rating scale for pain improved in 81% of the patients.
Before HBOT patients had severe complaints of pain and swelling, difficulty in raising or moving the arm, over sensitivity and skin problems on or in the area of the affected breast. If you swipe across to the second slide, I have inserted the table from the study which shows that the percentages of patients with the severe complaints had decreased significantly.
The EQ-5D health status questionnaire was also used within the study. Improvement was seen in mobility, self-care, pain, activity and anxiety. Overall, the EQ-5D score improved in 71% of the patients.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) encompasses a broad spectrum of disabilities and symptoms due to the complexity of the injury, impacting cognitive, physical and psychosocial factors. The pathophysiology following a TBI has both a primary and a secondary component. At the primary onset there is a variable degree of irreversible damage to the brain tissue, making it hard to interfere with the process other than preventing the trauma from taking place. Within the secondary component a chain of events occurs which results in ongoing injury through hypoxia, oedema and ischaemia, secondary to impaired calcium homeostasis, release of excitotoxicity neurotransmitters and raised intracranial pressure. HBOT is a current interest in the field of TBI, it has been proven to supress inflammation, inhibit apoptosis (block cell death), promote the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels, neurogenesis (process of new neurons forming in the brain) and also protects the integrity of the blood-brain barrier.

Osteomyelitis is infection in the bone and can be difficult to treat due to the relatively limited amount of blood vessels in bone.

Hbot improves the pe*******on of certain antibiotics into bone and stimulates osteogenesis.

Furthermore, infected bone has a decreased oxygen content, hbot increases the oxygen content to normal or above normal levels during treatment.
