Meet the team Tuesday: Week 6.

Introducing our dedicated funeral director for Worcester and Droitwich. Sarah Roberts.

1. What brought you into this profession?
I was introduced to Matthew through a mutual friend shortly after Jacksons opened on Hanley Road. At the time, it was still early days for the Jacksons. As I was working shifts in my previous role, I offered to volunteer with on-call support and office cover. That initial involvement sparked my passion for the funeral profession, and it grew from there.

2. What other jobs have you done and where have you worked?
I spent 25 years working in the care sector, beginning as a carer and progressing through to the role of Care Manager. This background has given me a strong foundation in supporting people during emotionally challenging times—something that has proved invaluable in my current role.

3. What is your favourite part of the job?
What I value most is supporting families to ensure their loved one’s final journey is carried out with dignity and respect, in a way that truly reflects their wishes. I also very much appreciate the team I work with—our work is only possible because of the dedication and compassion we share.

4. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a funeral director?
It’s important to understand that this role goes far beyond leading a funeral procession. Every funeral director brings their own approach, but for me, the heart of the job is connecting with families, listening to their needs, and being well-organised. Compassion, attention to detail, and emotional resilience are key qualities in this profession.

5. Where would I find you on a Sunday afternoon?
Most likely relaxing at home with some downtime—probably watching Netflix and doing the ironing.

Thank you, Sarah: for everything you bring to Team Jacksons, for your dedicated support to your community, and for always keeping us entertained with the boards of words you cannot say correctly 🙂

Here we are again, Fact Friday ⚰️

During the medieval period, many parish churches had community coffins, which could be borrowed or leased to transport the deceased person from the home to the churchyard. When they arrived at the graveside, the body would be removed from the coffin and buried in a simple shroud.

As we know now, this is very different and every loved one has a unique coffin to suit the families wishes. ⚰️🌻

Fact Friday!

While flowers are common at services throughout the world, rosemary also has a significant place in the history of funerals too. This fragrant herb is rich in symbolism, with its meaning ranging from remembrance to loyalty and friendship. As an evergreen plant, it was often also associated with eternal life. 🌻

Fact Friday!

Unless requested to wear a specific colour, it is usually respectful to wear black or dark shades to funeral services. It is believed that this tradition dates back to the Roman period, where individuals would wear a dark toga (known as a toga pulla) after the passing of a loved one or family member. This tradition persisted throughout British history, with the Victorians in particular favouring black as the colour of mourning.

In recent times, the funerals times are changing and this is not seen as disrespectful; and we are seeing more and more colour to reflect the person and there life.

Meet the team Tuesday.

Week 3: Introducing our Funeral Casual Bearer, John.

1. What bought you into this profession?
After retirement I was looking for a job that had personal satisfaction for me, I was at a family BBQ and was asked what I was going to do with my time now I had retired, Not knowing and not having thought about it Paul, a family member, said had I ever thought about funeral bearing, then he gave me a phone number for Jackson’s Funeral Directors, at first I didn’t consider it but as time went on the idea grew on me and I gave them a call, which I am so pleased I did.

2. What other jobs have you done and where have you worked
I started work in 1970 at the age of 15 working for Howell Refrigeration, which is now the site of our Worcester Branch. In 1973 I started working for Worcester Royal China Company, working as a Departmental Manager until it closed in 2004 (31 years). After that I worked as a Night Shift Manager at a Credit Card Company for 10 years, then worked as a Kiln Supervisor for a brickworks in Hartlebury until I retired in 2021 aged 66.

3. What is your favourite part of the job?
I don’t have a favourite part. The team I work with, the families we meet even down to cleaning the cars, all make the job very worthwhile and I feel very privileged to be part of the Jackson’s team.

4. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to come into the funeral industry as a funeral bearer?
I would say give it a go; it is a privilege to be part of a very professional team who will welcome you and guide you always.

5. Where would I find you on a Sunday afternoon?
Family is very important to me, We are a very close family; there’s always something going on, BBQ’s, meals out and a few drinks. I also have an allotment which I love and that takes up some of my time on Sundays.

Thank you, John, for your dedication to our team and for always keeping us updated on the best places to eat out.

Fact Friday!

In the history of funerals and wakes, many of the rituals or traditions we have can be traced back to pagan practises. It is thought that the tradition of a wake can be traced back to pre-Christian times, in which family members would keep a constant vigil over their deceased loved one lest they wake. It is also thought that this vigil would help to prevent evil spirits from taking hold. It is typically believed that this type of wake would be held before the funeral or burial.

Today, we tend to hold a wake after the funeral service. Instead of keeping vigil over the body, we use this time to celebrate our loved one’s life and grieve together with friends and family.
