🌟 Travel Light on Discharge Day 🌟
At WUTH we’re committed to supporting patients to leave hospital safely and quickly. You can help by taking these small steps:

🧳 Limit personal belongings, especially on the day of discharge. This will help you get home quickly and keep things running smoothly. Large or multiple bags take up valuable space on hospital transport and can delay patients getting home. If you have a lot of belongings in hospital, ask family or friends to take them home ahead of time so you can travel light on discharge day.

✅ Use the Patient Discharge Checklist to help you prepare for your discharge. If you haven’t been given one, please ask a member of staff. It’s been created by patients to help families prepare for and support a timely, well-coordinated discharge.

You may be taken to the Discharge Hospitality Centre (DHC) on the day of discharge, depending on your circumstances. This provides a comfortable space for patients who are ready to go home while they wait for medicines, transport, or final checks.

🤝 Working together helps everyone — these simple actions help you return home sooner and ensure we can continue caring for those who need urgent care.

This week is National HIV Testing Week..

HIV can affect all ages, genders, ethnicities and s*xualities and a large number of new HIV infections come from unprotected s*x with someone who isn’t aware they have HIV.

Testing regularly is important to knowing your HIV status, allowing appropriate care and treatment to begin as early as possible.

The team is encouraging anyone, regardless of their age, gender, s*xuality or ethnicity, who hasn’t had an HIV test to take a test. Testing for HIV is quick and free, confidential and easy. Even if you’ve had a test but have changed your s*xual partner it’s important to take another test.

Testing regularly is important. People should not be afraid of having an HIV test, early diagnosis and related care can offer people living with HIV, support in their day to day lives. Early diagnosis and related care can offer people living with HIV support in their day-to-day lives.

Sexual Health Wirral offer clinics six days a week across two locations, these include daytime and evening sessions.

Staying active while you’re in hospital can make a real difference to your recovery.

Spending long periods in bed can lead to muscle weakness, stiffness and reduced mobility. In fact, around one week of bed rest can result in up to a 10% loss of muscle strength. This can affect confidence, balance and independence.

Even small amounts of movement help. Sitting out of bed, gentle exercise or short walks can speed recovery.

Make sure you get the support you need from our teams to help you move safely and at the right pace for you. If you're a carer or family member visiting your loved one, help them to get up, get dressed and get moving if they are well enough.

A brilliant community fundraising effort has helped bring vital epilepsy bed alarms to young patients cared for at Wirral University Teaching Hospital 💙

Inspired by Ethan Brown and supported by local bikers, businesses and community members, thousands of pounds have been raised to fund specialist equipment for children with epilepsy at Arrowe Park Hospital.

These alarms can make a life-changing difference for families, helping parents respond quickly to seizures at night and supporting safer care at home.

Thank you to everyone who donated, fundraised and supported this incredible effort.

Race Equality Week - Change Needs All Of Us

As part of Race Equality Week, our Senior Leadership Team took part in a development initiative delivered by leading charity BRAP. The session focused on understanding what racism is, what it means to be actively anti-racist, and reflecting on the role leaders play in making positive change.

The NHS is truly multinational and multicultural, with over 75 nationalities represented across our workforce. We value the richness and diversity this brings — strengthening our teams and improving the care we provide for our patients.

Work is ongoing to understand the experiences of our staff and to challenge racism. We recognise that being anti-racist requires continual learning and listening, and we are committed to providing learning opportunities for staff across the organisation.

As we continue to mark Race Equality Week, we’re proud to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

Across Wirral University Teaching Hospital and Wirral Health and Care Trust, our international workforce represents more than 75 countries. This diversity is a real strength. Inclusion, respect and fair access to healthcare matter deeply to us, and every colleague plays a vital role in delivering safe, compassionate and high-quality care.

Haris Sultan, Joint Non-Executive Director at WUTH and WCHC, is a third-generation immigrant from a Pakistani background. He understands how important it is to feel respected at work — and to know that your background is never a barrier to being heard, valued or able to progress.

Race Equality Week is a reminder that creating fair opportunities and inclusive leadership is ongoing work — and change needs all of us.
