National North West Core Surgery Interview Course

Welcome to the National NW Core Surgery Interview Course. This highly successful course is now in its 8th year running, with expert faculty that have secured top ranks in the country, including core surgical trainees, specialist registrars and consultants. Competition for surgical training is growing, and furthermore the bottleneck for training numbers is now at the Core Surgical Training level rather than Specialist Training. Therefore preparing yourself to your maximum capacity is crucial in order to surpass this bottleneck and get your place in core surgical training. The day is divided into two halves:
-Medical Students and FY1 Doctors - Morning session only. Essential interactive tutorials with vital information about how to get ahead of the game. Medical school is the ideal starting point for preparing in a career in Surgery. Also included is LIVE interview demonstrations by the expert faculty. Hot lunch included.
-FY2/'F3' doctors - All day course. Essential lectures in the morning along with LIVE interview demonstrations from expert faculty. You will have the opportunity to scrutinise many surgical portfolios on the day including those from faculty members scoring full marks in their interview. The afternoon session will consist of mock interviews by senior faculty members, including both verbal and written feedback. Doctors are strongly encouraged to bring their surgical portfolios on the day in order to gain invaluable feedback. Course Structure:
The morning will consist of interactive lectures given by expert faculty including CST tutors and training programme directors on how to maximise your interview score and performance on the day
The afternoon will consist of a mock interview with an expert panel and you will be scored using a similar mark scheme to CST interview and given verbal and written feedback on your performance. The three stations you will be assessed on include:
-Portfolio Station
You will be critiqued and marked on your portfolio and there will be a portfolio library of successful core surgical trainees including those from candidates who ranked in the top 2% in the country.
-Management Station
You will be assessed on various management scenarios and will be given written and verbal feedback.
-Clinical Station
You will be marked on your approach to the clinical scenario and be given feedback on how to improve your answer in the real interview

The afternoon session will consist of mock interviews by senior faculty members, including both verbal and written feedback. Doctors are strongly encouraged to bring their surgical portfolios on the day in order to gain invaluable feedback. Building on from feedback from previous years, this year we are introducing a TWO day course in order to maximise your chances of being successful.
We will be holding a second day on 19 January 2019 (included with your ticket) for further interview practice with senior faculty. Hot lunch included.
