An eye examination is so much more than just a check of your vision. It's an opportunity for us to check the health of your eyes and to look for any early signs of problems.

Make sure you attend for your eye examination at least every two years, more often if advised.

We often get asked at what age children should have their first eye exam, with many parents asking us whether their child is too young to have an exam.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

If you have no concerns and you haven’t noticed any issues with your child’s eyes or vision then from about the age of three is ideal, and we would definitely recommend that they have their first routine sight test before they start school.​​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​​If you have any concerns about your child’s eyes or vision, they may need to be seen sooner so please give us a call for advice.​​​​​​​

We have lots of ways to make your child’s eye test a fun and positive experience, and should they need spectacles we have a wide range to choose from including specialist frames for very young children.​​​​​​​​

You can help keep your child’s eyes healthy with regular eye tests, a healthy diet and getting them to regularly spend time outdoors (aim for two hours a day).
​​​​​​​​
Extended screen time is associated with an increased risk of developing and worsening myopia (nearsightedness) and also the onset of dry eye in children so you should look to limit your child’s screen use and balance it with time spent outdoors.​​​​​​​​

Protecting precious young eyes from UV is also important, and we sell children’s sunglasses, both with or without prescription.

Central heating, cold winds and prolonged screen use can leave your eyes feeling dry and irritated. Help relieve symptoms and reduce discomfort with a warm eye compress made from your used tea bags!​​​​​​​​

How to Make a Tea Bag Compress​​​​​​​​:

1. Make a cuppa as you normally would but don’t add the milk and sugar just yet.​​​​​​​​

2. Once your tea has brewed squeeze the tea bag out, allow it to cool and then sit back, close your eyes and place the bags over your eyelids.​​​​​​​​

3. Relax with the tea bag(s) in place for 5 to 10 minutes.​​​​​​​​

4. Make sure you use a separate bag for each eye.​​​​​​​​
