An ankle sprain typically happens when you accidentally twist or turn your ankle in an awkward way. This can stretch or tear the ligaments but can also affect tendons and blood vessels in the surrounding areas leading to recurrent pain and swelling.

While mild sprains can be treated at home with the RICE method, if pain persists you can get referred to a physiotherapist through a GP.

At Penn Clinic, we can help you with enhanced rehabilitation to ensure you regain optimal use of your ankle. Book an appointment or talk to us today about the various treatment methods we provide that's tailored to your condition.

Sports injury?

Osteopathy works great at helping you get back to peak fitness after a sports injury. Even though sportspeople recover more quickly due to their general fitness levels, it is best to seek advice early to avoid any chronic effects.

Sciatica is often used to describe almost any pain in the leg. It happens due to the irritation of the sciatic nerve, a bundle of nerves connected to the lower spine. There are many risk factors such as age, posture, diabetes, or obesity, but osteopathic treatment is often very effective for most common causes of sciatica.

A range of gentle and calming techniques is used to reduce pressure of the nerve and relax tight joints and muscles. If the pain is persistent, a mixture of osteopathy, to help the spinal mechanics and acupuncture, to reduce the nerve pain works very well.

Book an appointment with our osteopath as to how this should be implemented or contact us if you need any further details.

Neck pains can be a deal breaker if they affect your quality of life.

One way you can help your neck is by changing your sleeping position. One more tip which could have a significant impact in reducing neck pain would be changing your pillows.

If you sleep on your back, choose a rounded pillow to support the natural curve of your neck, with a flatter pillow cushioning your head. You can use a feather pillow or a memory foam pillow which easily conforms to the shape of your neck.

For chronic neck pain issues, you can always book an appointment with us and our experts will advise a course of treatment that works for your needs.

Here’s an easy lower back stretch you can do at home. This knee-to-chest stretch is good to relax your hips, thighs, and glutes while promoting overall relaxation.

● Lie on your back with both knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
● Keep your left knee bent or extend it straight out along the floor.
● Draw your right knee into your chest, holding your hands behind your thigh or at the top of your shinbone.
● Lengthen your spine all the way down to your tailbone and avoid lifting your hips.
● Breathe deeply, releasing any tension.
● Hold this pose for 1 to 3 minutes.
● Repeat with the other leg.

As always, be especially gentle and cautious if you have any type of injury or health concern. It’s always best to talk to your physiotherapist if you have chronic pain.

If your hands bear the brunt of your job after a long day, here’s a quick massage you can do by yourself.

- Stretch your hands and fingers out.
- Rub each finger from the base to the tip, gently pulling and twisting each finger as you go.
- Next, rest your left hand, palm upward, on your lap. Squeeze the fleshy part of your palm between your right thumb and index finger, moving from your wrist to the base of your thumb.
- Now squeeze that web between your left index finger and thumb several times, looking for any tender points.
- Then rub the entire palm with your right thumb, applying firm pressure and using gliding strokes from the wrist to the base of each finger.
- Repeat this process on your right hand.
