World Down Syndrome Day was created to help ensure that people with Down Syndrome have the same freedoms and opportunities as everybody else.

To recognise this day and to help raise awareness, we’ve put together some facts and information below to help educate and challenge misconceptions of people with Down Syndrome.

The day is often celebrated by wearing bright or mismatched “funky socks”, fundraising, taking part in awareness activities, and sharing stories that highlight the voices and achievements of people with Down Syndrome.

Red Nose Day Madness Takes Over Cambian Whinfell School !

This morning at Cambian Whinfell School, the usual calm was replaced by a burst of creativity and a whole lot of red noses!

Young people and staff alike dove nose-first into decorating their very own Red Noses, turning the school into a sea of giggles and glitter.

“It started as a simple craft session,” said one enthusiastic young person, “but then the noses took on a life of their own! Some looked like superheroes, others like tiny clowns ready to save the world.”

Between bursts of laughter and friendly competition over who had the most outrageous design, everyone took a moment to reflect on why Red Nose Day matters. Charitable work was the real star of the show, reminding us all that a little silliness can go a long way to helping others.

Staff members admitted they were just as competitive as the young people, with one teacher confessing, “I may have gone a bit overboard with the sparkles... but it was worth it!”

All in all, a nose-tastic start to the day that left everyone smiling literally!

Today marks the first day of spring, the season of new life and fresh beginnings making it the perfect time to celebrate the fantastic farm at Cambian Dilston College.

The farm is such an important part of college life. We are really fortunate to provide a hands-on learning environment where students build practical skills, confidence and independence every day.

Caring for the animals brings so many benefits:

• Building responsibility and routine
• Developing communication and teamwork skills
• Supporting wellbeing through time outdoors and animal interaction
• Gaining real-life, vocational experience

At a specialist college like Dilston, opportunities like this make learning fun and engaging. As the new season begins, we’re excited for another term of growth.

As part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we’re recognising the importance of understanding and supporting neurological differences.

Across the Cambian group, we are committed to recognising the strengths of every young person. Through personalised approaches, we support each individual to build confidence, develop their abilities and reach their full potential.

In this video, Joshua Hand shares how taking small, consistent steps can lead to meaningful change, highlighting one example of how tailored support can make a real difference.

This week is a global opportunity to challenge stereotypes, celebrate neurodivergent talent, and continue building environments where every individual can thrive.

Last week, we celebrated World Book Day, and we just had to share this incredible story from Cambian Southlands School.
One of our young people really wanted to be a wonderfully quirky ocean creature, the “Strawberry Squid”, known for its one big eye and one small eye.

They were so determined to dress up as this amazing deep sea creature that, when they couldn’t find a book featuring it…
they wrote and illustrated their own!

Complete with artwork, descriptions, and fascinating facts, they created a whole book from scratch so they could bring their favourite sea creature to life for World Book Day.

This is creativity, passion, and learning at its finest.
Well done to this inspiring young author and illustrator at Southlands!

Supporting young people to grow in confidence, discover new opportunities, and enjoy their school years is at the heart of everything we do. Stories like Jack’s are exactly why we do what we do, and feedback from parents like Jack’s mum truly reflects this.

Jack’s mum shared: “Jack spent 7 years at Hill House school and lived the most wonderful life alongside his peers. Jack exceeded all my expectations (my extended family too) and loved every single minute at Hill House school. I fought with all my might to have my precious boy remain with The Cambian Group and I’m delighted he’s now been able to successfully transition to Stratford Lodge.”

We’re so grateful to Jack’s mum for sharing this with us, and to our incredible staff who continue to make such a powerful and lasting difference in the lives of young people and their families. It has been, and continues to be, a pleasure to be part of Jack’s journey.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Cambian Tyldesley School for achieving Runner-Up in the CareTech Blooming Marvellous Competition.

We love seeing our young people learn through hands-on experiences, and Tyldesley’s growing project is a brilliant example. Young people worked together to build and maintain the school allotment, cultivating fruit, vegetables, and flowers while developing valuable life skills, confidence, and teamwork.

From preparing the allotment to harvesting produce and cooking with their own ingredients, the project offered a rewarding farm-to-fork experience that promotes wellbeing, responsibility, and pride in achievement.

Congratulations to the whole Tyldesley team on this fantastic recognition.

Pengwern College shines again!

At the end of last year, Pengwern College underwent three Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) inspections, and the results speak for themselves, with all three rated Excellent.

CIW recognised the outstanding quality of care and support provided, reflecting on the dedication of our staff and the nurturing environment created for every student.

To mark this fantastic achievement, Graham Norris (Operations Director SEN) presented the team with three trophies in recognition of their hard work and commitment. A well-deserved celebration of an exceptional team effort.

We’re proud to support young people to thrive and reach their full potential in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

This World Book Day, the focus is on encouraging children to choose books they love, dive into stories that inspire them, and enjoy reading in their own way.

At Cambian Brook View School, Purple Class have been doing exactly that! Using the non-fiction book The World’s Most Amazing Places, students journeyed through some of the most amazing places on our planet from the vibrant Great Barrier Reef to towering volcanoes.

And they didn’t just read… they brought science to life with their very own Great Purple Class Eruption! Colourful “lava” bubbled over as curiosity, learning, and imagination came together in the classroom.

A brilliant reminder that books can spark discovery, creativity, and fun!

About Cambian

Cambian is one of the largest providers of specialist education and behavioural health services for children in the UK. Our services have a specific focus on individuals who present with high severity needs.

We provide a broad range of specialist services across England and Wales. These services include specialist education schools and colleges for both day and residential learners, residential care homes and a therapeutic fostering service.

Our specialist education schools and colleges support children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger Syndrome (AS), moderate to severe learning disabilities, associated challenging behaviours and complex needs.

Our specialist residential care homes support children with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) and associated complex needs. We provide care, therapy and education for a discrete cohort of needs within these homes; this includes provisions for children who have experienced Complex Trauma (neglect and abuse), those who have been sexually exploited, and those with a learning disability. These homes are all supported by specialists schools to support their individual educational needs.
