Raising Awareness of Stroke in May
For stroke survivors who need to improve their speech and communication skills, there are 3 key factors:
1) someone to talk to - and 'talking' might mean pointing to a picture, or using gesture
2) a listener who really LISTENS and wants to understand
3) something worth talking about.

Hillingdon Stroke Support Group can help with all three!
We have the people AND the fun activities.

Raising Awareness of Stroke in May
Our thanks to these 3 volunteers for attending Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex yesterday. Lots of conversations with members of the public and information given out, and some donations collected to support our activities and minibus outings.
THANK YOU to everyone who talked with us yesterday. We look forward to seeing you at Uxbridge Library this Friday 8 May!

- Raising Awareness of Stroke in May.
We've said it before - just because you've had a stroke it doesn't mean you have to stop enjoying life. Earlier this year, Hillingdon Stroke Support Group had a guided tour of Brentford Musical Museum. It finished with a performance on the Wurlitzer cinema organ, including an explanation and a clip of silent film accompanied by the organist. Oh yes, and the buffet lunch they gave us was pretty good too!!

Raising Awareness of Stroke in May.
Most members of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group now have Aphasia. For some this means hesitant speech, or difficulty finding words. For others it means difficulty concentrating, focusing attention and understanding what they have heard. Some members can say only 10 words, or 4, or 1, so they use gesture, or point to pictures, or write the beginning of the word they mean, and the listener expresses what they have understood.
No matter which way our members communicate, the Group gives us a REASON to "talk" together!

It's International Dawn Chorus Day! The birdsong makes Hillingdon Stroke Support Group think of the walks we did in nature for .

Members, friends and family covered 1,222.5 miles - (in one case, 0.5 miles pushing the walking frame 3 times each week around the garden; in another case, running 240 miles).

For we say a healthy lifestyle can lower the chances of having a stroke.

Keep active and enjoy the birdsong!

We kicked off Make May Purple with today's stall at Highgrove Fitness Centre, Ruislip. Here's our volunteer about to raise awareness of stroke. Did you know that every day in the UK 240 people have a stroke? The Stroke Association is here to give people strength through support.

Visitors to the Fitness Centre collected information to give to the people they know who have been affected by stroke. Some gave donations too - a huge THANK YOU to all of those who spoke to us today!

Look out for us at Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex on Tuesday 5 May.
