🏉 Tackling Male Loneliness Through Rugby League 🏉
FREE wellbeing programme for young men in Wigan & Wakefield
A new Government‑backed initiative is now running in Wigan and the Wakefield district to support young men who may be feeling isolated or struggling with their mental wellbeing. The Offload and Ahead of the Game programmes use the power of Rugby League to help build confidence, connection and resilience.
🌟 What is Offload?
Offload is a six‑week programme designed for boys and young men aged 16–24 who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and may be at higher risk of loneliness.
🏉 What makes it special?
- Sessions are led by Rugby League legends including Keith Senior and Adrian Morley.
- Delivered by trained former players who understand the pressures young men face.
- Co‑designed with local young men to make sure it’s relevant and supportive.
- Hosted by local club Foundations: Wigan Warriors, Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers.
💬 What happens in the sessions?
- Each two‑hour session offers:
- Team‑building activities
- Physical exercise
- Practical mental fitness tools
- A relaxed, no‑pressure space to talk
- Life skills to help young men look after themselves and feel part of their community
🎯 Why this matters
The programme is part of the Government’s new Men’s Health Strategy, recognising that too many young men experience loneliness and lack a sense of belonging. Sport provides a powerful way to bring people together, build trust and create positive routines.
