💥Does sports massage hurt & why? 😵

Tight muscles hurt due to a combo of restricted blood flow, nerve irritation, and the body’s compensations for imbalance.

Muscles that are tight are in a contracted state. Being in this state for a prolonged time, causes the muscle fibres to contract and press on the blood vessels. Low blood flow slows oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and preventing the removal of waste products which can lead to pain and discomfort.

Muscle overuse and fatigue can cause tight, painful sensations. Holding a muscle or group of muscles in a contracted state due to stress, sport or repetitive movements can cause it/them to become fatigued and painful!

Deep tissue massage that targets deeper muscles and their connective tissue can cause discomfort. Movements such as friction massage is not comfortable but is great to break up adhesions, realign scar tissue, promote healing, flexibility and tissue elasticity.

When breaking up adhesions in the tissue and ironing out muscle knots, there can be discomfort due to the bunching up of nerves and nerve irritation. But releasing the tension will release the pressure off the nerve’s receptors.

As a sports massage therapist, we promote healing, reduce muscle tension, lengthen shortened muscles, and improve performance. Temporary discomfort can be beneficial in the long run.

Personally, I do not agree with “no pain, no gain” when it comes to the effectiveness of a sports massage. I work with muscles to bring them to their healthiest form, not traumatise them any more they already are. I look for restrictions in movement caused by short muscles. Lengthening these short muscles and releasing the tension will help in decreasing the pain.

I am not saying sports massage is a walk in the park… unless you’re walking through Jurassic Park…

Some parts of the massage can be painful, but I can also ease off the pressure and still give an effective massage.

Whether you're training for a marathon, running for fun or your own sanity or just waiting to be a bit healthier. Keeping your knees healthy is key to keeping moving!

Check out these 6 simple steps to keep you moving and running at your best. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

1
STRETCH YOUR QUADS
Knee pain can often be related to overused quadriceps. Overusing your quads can place a huge amount of stress through the knee cap and patella tendon which, over time it can increase irritation and pain. Stretching your quads is an easy way to
knee pressure and reduce pain during running.

2
INVEST TIME IN YOUR WARMUPS
Overlooked and underrated, this important component to your training programme is an easy way to increase blood flow, improve brain to muscle connections, and increase your overall running efficiency. Ignoring a 5 minute warmup can leave you muscle “cold” and cause stress in the knees.

3
STRENGTHEN YOUR CALVES
There is an important connection between strong calves and running pain free. Strong calves not only reduces your run times but takes pressure off your kneecap and tendons. Performing heel/calf raises and toe walks is an easy way to built strength in the calves.

4
ADJUSTING YOUR RUNNING PROGRAMME
Reducing your weekly milage or changing your running methods such as a run/walk instead of the constant pace can help your pain subside, keep irritation down and reduce recovery time.

5
MOBILISE YOUR HIPS
Hips are most likely the main culprit to lower limb injuries. Focus on improving flexibility in your glutes, adductors and hip flexor group muscles. Stretching these groups off, will set you up for an easier run, allowing your hips to be utilised and reducing stress from your knees. The Pidgeon pose is a great hip opener and stretches the glutes too!

6
ANALISE YOUR MOVEMENT WITH AN EXPERT
Not all knee pain is the same. To ensure complete recovery and return you to doing what you love, find a specialist who can test your range of movement, strength tests and create a bespoke treatment plan to help you and your needs. Regular sports massage treatments can keep you running at your best.

For quicker recovery from injury, maintenance massages to keep you running at your best, drop me a message to get booked in.

Sports massage can be for anyone who has muscle tension, stress, or pain.

Just because you don’t play sports or go to the gym doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a sports massage!

How does your job affect your body? 🤔👇
👉Are you slumped over your desk working in an office? 💻
👉Are you on your feet 12+ hours a day working as a health professional or security? 👩‍⚕️👮‍♂️
👉Are you a driver who is stuck behind a wheel and sitting all day? 🚚
👉Are you a beautician or a hairdresser hunched over clients all day? 💇‍♀️💆‍♂️
👉Are you in a really manual job doing lots of heavy lifting? 🔧🔨
👉Are you a parent running around after your children doing lots of bending and lifting? 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

You could really benefit from a massage to relieve stress related tension that you get from your job.

I've been in the position where I was working 12-14 hours a day, possibly longer. Taking the mental load of a receptionist in a hotel spa with Covid restrictions, then once the spa closes, it was time to clean. Stress of therapists pulling sickies, rearranging treatments, stepping in to perform massages, and dealing with a leaking hot tub and out of whack chemicals of an old plant room system. Throw in a break up and a lot of moving. Both a mentally and physically demanding job takes a toll on your body. My eating habits changed, I lost a lot of weight and started getting injuries that put a stop to all work. It's frustrating and heartbreaking to look back to the past and think how much I was working myself to the ground and wished I looked after myself.

Have you ever had whiplash?

It is caused by an acceleration and deceleration motion from a sudden impact such as a car accident.

This impact, strains and stretches the soft tissues in the neck and shoulders and can cause long lasting problems, such as:

💥Neck stiffness and pain
💥Restriction of movement
💥Nerve irritation or tingling in the arms or fingers
💥Jaw pain
💥Vertigo
💥Difficulty concentrating or memory problems
💥Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
💥Headaches

Personalised sports massage therapy can target the strained muscles in the neck and shoulders. Treatments can help reduce pain and improve range of movement in the neck and shoulders, which can benefit person and professional life.

Targeting the muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back can help break up unwanted scar tissue that has built up through reoccurring damage to the tissues, soften the muscle tissue and reducing the tension and allowing easier movement and becoming pain free.

A client came to me with neck pain. Following their consultation, they mentioned they were in a car accident years ago and had whiplash from the impact of the crash. They appeared to have very restricted range of movement in the neck and a lot of pain when I first massaged. Now over 3 treatments later, they feel lighter in moving, neck movements are smoother and are happier from the reduced pain!

A few massage techniques such as trigger point therapy and myofascial release has allowed me to release the tension, stiffness and restricted movement and stretched short muscles that have been stuck in a certain position for years.

Hydration! 💦

Water helps muscles and joints work correctly. Around 75% of muscle is water and it is the main reservoir of water in the body.

Studies show, skin and muscle are the first and main organs to lose water when dehydrated. Muscle pain and dehydration can be linked.

Staying hydrated... 👇
👉 Great for making your skin look and feel better.
👉 Great for removing toxins from the body.
👉 It keeps the body systems working efficiently.
👉 Helps with weight loss.
👉 Boosts performance during exercise.
👉 Helps keep away the hangovers!

Dehydration occurs when there is a loss of fluids through sweating, urination and respiratory losses and fluid intake does not match up to the fluid loss.

Some signs of dehydration can include:
👎Feeling of being thirsty
👎Irritability
👎Headaches
👎Dizziness
👎Muscle cramps
👎Muscle pain

Any of these should tell you that your body needs fluid. And yes, coffee is included in your daily fluid intake but should be consumed in moderation and not be used as a complete replacement for water... Sorry!

Water should be your primary source of fluids.

It is recommended by the NHS to drink 6-8 glasses a day. More fluid will be needed if it is warm/hot conditions, higher levels of physical activity with higher rates of sweating and if you have illness.

Try multiplying 35ml by the amount you weigh in KG to get an rough idea of how much water you need to drink. I am 90kg. So 90(kg) x 35(ml) = 3150ml or 3.15 Litres of water.

👍If you don't like water, you can make it interesting by infusing fruits and veg to give it a healthy flavour.

👍If you find you are forgetting to drink enough water throughout the day, set a reminder on your phone to encourage you to drink!

👍A benefit of having a massage is that it increased blood flow and helps remove toxins from the body. Only with adequate hydration can the kidneys work correctly to remove toxins from the body.
