Monday's can be manic!
Here is your reminder to squeeze in a few mindful minutes even on the go....

Take a few moments to slow down and breathe... take 5 deep breaths, try the 4-7-8 method, and is a great way to calm your thoughts, reduce anxiety, and even help with sleep.

Keeping a journal can help you process the day, manage negative thoughts and thinking patterns, and allow you to refocus. Journal has also been linked to improving the immune system system.

Checking in with your body allows you to connect your emotional self and physical self. Mindful techniques and being out in nature can help improve self abd body awareness, reduce stress and anxiety, and have physical pain.

Using the five senses (sound, smell, sight, taste, and touch) to ground yourself in the present moment can enhance your experiences with the world around you. Appreciating the five senses can help you slow down and live for the moment. The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique is a good way of slowing down, particularly in times of high stress, anxiety, or panic.

Self-care is not selfish. It is important to take the time to do things that help relax and manage both your physical health and mental health. When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.

Facts about anxiety.....
Did you know?????

*Anxiety that is left untreated has been found to lead to a variety of chronic physical illnesses, including heart disease, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal conditions, decreased immunity, and damage to the heart and lungs.

*Anxiety can cause anger. When we feel powerless over a situation, or our life is out of our control, expressing anger is a natural way to feel a sense of control. However, it's also much easier to lash out at others rather than acknowledge the real issue (anxiety) and deal with it.

*Anxiety can lead to physical symptoms like difficulty focusing and concentrating, restlessness, irritability, and frustration. Physical weakness, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, nausea, hot flashes, cold hands and feet, and dizziness. People experiencing a panic attack often believe they are having a heart attack.

*Anxiety disorders start in childhood. Anxiety is estimated to affect 5-19% of all children and adolescents, and about 2-5% of children younger than 12. Children are still developing their verbal skills they can’t say, “I have anxiety," so instead, it shows as stomach aches, headaches, or behavioural issues. Other common anxiety symptoms in children include restlessness, inattention, avoidance, and frequent outbursts. Sometimes, children actually get misdiagnosed as having ADHD.

*Anxiety is naturally higher on a morning. Waking up in a panic each morning can be really distressing as it begins to take hold before coping mechanisms can be put in place. Anxiety is often worse in the morning because of cortisol, the stress hormone, and biologically, it is at its highest one hour after waking.

While heading back to going to school/ college can bring excitement for some, it can cause worry and deep dred for others.

Mixed emotions are completely normal for young people to feel when heading back to the classroom, particularly after the summer break. Excessive or prolonged feelings of stress and worry may indicate that you/ your young person is suffering from school anxiety. If this is the case, it’s important to be able to provide them with some strategies that can help to support them in managing these worries.

* Encouraging young people to talk to someone they trust, parent/ carer, friend, teacher, Dr or counsellor. It’s important to validate the young person's emotions surrounding school anxiety.

*Rest and sleep are key in managing thoughts, feelings and emotions. Young people need between 8 - 10hrs of sleep a night. Regularly not getting enough sleep leads to sleep deprivation, which will then increase their anxieties and prolong the symptoms.

*Getting back into a routine is really important. Consistency with bedtime, meal time and play/ relaxation time will give your young person a sense of predictability and stability, reducing anxiety provoking situations.

*Going for a walk, taking part in exercise is a great distraction technique. It will help your young person calm their brain and body by reducing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol and increasing feel good hormones like dopamine and oxytocin.

* using calming and coping strategies like mindfulness, journaling, breathing techniques, sensory boxes or having a creative outlet like drawing or painting can really support your young person to be able to manage both their physical and psychological symptoms.
