If you witness a cardiac arrest, it is important to call 999 and start CPR straight away.

Perform CPR by placing your hands on the centre of the person’s chest and interlocking your fingers.

Use your body weight to push down 5 to 6cm on their chest.

Repeat this at a rate of 2 per second until the person regains consciousness or an ambulance arrives.

One of our volunteers received a pin badge recently as recognition of their involvement in a successful resuscitation of a patient whose heart had stopped.

They replied telling us this story
I qualified as a CFR at the in September as I needed a new focus and challenge after the loss of my husband of many years.
The role has given me the opportunity to give back to our community and meet some amazing people along the way. It really has been life changing.

Thank you so much to my Yorkshire Ambulance trainers, the training weekends were fantastic. We had a great intake with people from all different backgrounds.
All the crews and the ambulance dispatch staff have been so helpful and have made me feel hugely welcomed. Cheers everyone!

This was my first cardiac arrest, which was followed closely by a second a few days later and then a third a few days after that!!
I have learnt so much and feel so grateful to be a part of this amazing team. You are all awesome!!

A final huge thanks must go to my mentor and partner volunteer Morgan who has been with me on all of these jobs. He really is the best teacher, guide and support. He offers his time, commitment and passion to the CFR role selflessly. Always wanting to help others ❤️

Well done to you all, you’re the BEST!!

Recently multiple volunteers from across Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) voluntary activities attended a Studio in Leeds to share their stories on camera. They spoke about why they chose to start volunteering, what they enjoy most, and the difference their roles make not only to patients and YAS, but also to their own lives and communities. Staff also took part, highlighting the incredible impact volunteers have on our services and the people we care for.

This filming is part of a wider project to create materials for an upcoming promotional and recruitment campaign. Our goal is to celebrate and recognise the value of our existing volunteers while attracting new ones who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve across Yorkshire.

By sharing authentic experiences, we hope to inspire more people to get involved.

Thanks to funding from NHS Charities Together secured through Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity this initiative will launch YAS volunteer branding alongside a new website and supporting materials next year resources that will continue to promote volunteering for years to come. The next step is on-location filming to show what volunteering looks like in action.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers and staff who contributed to this important project. Your voices will help us strengthen and grow our volunteer network, ensuring it remains representative, inclusive, and impactful.

Community First Responders (CFRs) are volunteers who are trained to provide life-saving treatment to patients in the vital first few minutes of an emergency until our ambulance crew arrives.

When a 999 call is received in our Emergency Operations Centre, an ambulance response is dispatched. At the same time, a CFR on-call in the area can be alerted and asked to attend the incident to ensure that help reaches the patient as quickly as possible.

Why not come and join Josh?

Community First Responders (CFRs) are vital to their community, especially in rural areas.

CFR Josh was first on scene and was able to provide immediate care and complete checks on patient Muriel, before handing over to crew Barney and Chloe.

If you are planning to host your own event, please ensure you follow the necessary safety precautions.

If fireworks are used properly, accidents are avoidable but if they are used incorrectly, they can result in serious injuries.

In the event of an accident with fireworks or a bonfire, it is important to act quickly and follow the NHS advice for treating burns and scalds.

For minor injuries, visit NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk or go to a minor injuries unit. For serious injuries, seek urgent medical help by calling 999.

The response to an 80-year-old patient in Filey showcases how incredible teamwork makes a difference.

Alongside Tracey and Lauren, there is a specialist paramedic, a volunteer community first responder and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew – all working together to restart her heart and get her to hospital for further care.
