When mental health is struggling, it can make your mind turn against you — thoughts like “my life isn’t worth living” can show up because your brain is overwhelmed, exhausted, or stuck in patterns of hopelessness. Those thoughts don’t mean they’re true, but they can feel very real and convincing in the moment.
What’s happening is often a mix of things:
• Low mood and stress can distort how we see ourselves and the future.
• Your nervous system may be in survival mode, making it hard to feel hope or motivation.
• The mind searches for relief when pain feels unbearable, and sometimes it mistakenly suggests giving up.
How you can help yourself in those moments:
• Remind yourself that thoughts are not facts, even if they feel powerful.
• Reach out to someone you trust — talking out loud can take some of the weight off your mind.
• Ground yourself in the present with small things (breathing slowly, holding something warm, noticing details around you).
• Seek support from a professional who can help you untangle these thoughts safely.
You do not have to go through this alone. If you ever feel like you’re at risk of acting on these thoughts, please reach out right away. You can call Samaritans at 116 123 for free, any time of day or night, or visit their website here: https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/
You deserve safety, care, and support. Talking it through with someone who understands can make these thoughts a little less overwhelming.
