Christmas is going to be incredibly difficult for many parents this year.

With all of the discourse online about smartphones and children's mental health parents are often stuck.

On the one hand they're afraid that smartphones and social media will damage their child and they don't want to buy them one.

On the other hand, they don't want their child to feel left out and many parents realise it's innevitable that their child will either use a friend's phone to access the same stuff.

The parents who are going to succeed in this era are the ones that realise that there are benefits to smartphones and social media as well as being educated on how to protect their kids from the dangers.

That's what I train parents to do and it involves not just technical solutions like parental controls and data privacy but also interrelational skills so that IF something happens online, your child feels comfortable and you feel equipped to deal with it.

Comment 'Quiz' and i'll send you a quick assessment to see what you might be missing and how I can help.

How can you take back your privacy if you regret sharing images online?

In the UK and EU you have the 'right to be forgotten' and can request that your data and content be removed from online platforms and databases.

If you are under 18 or a parent of a child who's images have been posted online (perhaps innapropriate images have leaked) then check out 'Report Remove Tool'.

Ultimately, prevention is the best solution and so you might consider only posting pictures of the back of your child's face or editing the photo offline to cover them.

However in the age of AI tools to 'undress' images are already widely available and are only going to get better...

We want to share the things that are most important to us but before sharing that family holiday photo, slow down and ask yourself...

"Am I okay with EVERYONE seeing this?"

Because once it's posted online it's very difficult to take back.

If you guidance around tech this Christmas, comment 'Quiz' below and i'll send you a link to a short quiz to see where you can benefit from more support!

Thanks to
for being willing to have the tough conversations around this topic

This new survey isn't being spoken about enough! Have you ever wondered how your parenting compares to others when it comes to things like:

⏳️ Screentime

📵 Letting your child own a smartphone

🚨 Safety concerns about social media

This new Pew Research survey asked thousands of parents about their children's technology habits and some of the results are eye opening!

But some aren't surprising at all, especially as I work to complete my PHD studying online harms for children.

If you want to identify your knowledge gaps and get extra support when it comes to your children and tech around the Christmas period, comment 'Quiz' and i'll send you a link to get started!

What's the harm with sharing pictures of your children online? (Yes even on a 'private' account)

I'm so glad this conversation is happening in the mainstream now after decades of work in the online safety and Cyber Trauma world.

I've seen the worst of the worst when it comes to what can happen to your seemingly innocent family holiday photos posted online and parents should prepare and be informed before making their own choices.

This isn't to scaremonger parents but to prevent them from being blindsided if this were to happen.

Thanks to and for having me on and having the tough conversations.

It might seem innocent but after working with children in therapy who have been victims of Deep Fake blackmail, s3xtortion and cyber harrassment I want everyone to think about whether children are capable of consent when it comes to being posted online by their parents.

We know they're not capable of consent when it comes to MANY parts of life but social media has gone under the rug...

This applies especially to influencers with large online audiences but also normal everyday parents!

It's awful to think about but even your family holiday photos you post on Facebook for friends and family aren't really 'private' and can be used in all sorts of nasty ways.

We also have to acknowledge that if you're watching a public figure's content online, it's most likely making them money directly or indirectly.

What happens when those incentives to go viral and grab attention combine with knowing a cute video of your child will be super popular...it gets messy.

Love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

I get thousands of comments from children on my videos all saying the same thing...

And it's quite sad when you realise why they feel this way.

So here's a challenge, show this video to your child and ask them:

"What is something you wish I understood about you?

It may be uncomfortable but if you really listen and try to understand their answer, I hope it can deepen your connection with them.

It feels like technology is creating more disconnection and conflict between kids and parents than ever, so if you want to learn how to parent in this world of tech - comment 'Book' below and i'll send you a personal link!

Do you take away your child's devices as punishment?

Restricting technology is SOMETIMES the answer but before it becomes your go-to action, make sure you realise the true effect of taking their phone away.

If you want an alternative and want support with dealing with technology and your child - comment "Book" below and i'll send you a personal link.

Keep watching to hear my response and explanation.

I've heard from many people both personally and online about how they were deeply affected by the horrific videos posted of Charlie Kirk's assasination.

This moment felt like a tipping point not just for the 'culture wars' but also for my decades long work in researching and building awareness for Cyber Trauma.

For way too long clinicians have dismissed and ignored the effects of viewing distressing content online, simply because it's viewed on a screen.

Coincidently my PhD is close to completion, studying the effects of Cyber Trauma in humans and particularly children. This doesn't just include watching videos but experiences in video games and all types of media.

I'll be posting more about my research soon so follow for more!

Please share if you didn't realise this.

The new UK digital ID system will include children. That means millions of children's data being collected and stored somewhere.

As a therapist who works with child victims of online information leaks, hacks, blackmail, Cyber Trauma, this TERRIFIES ME.

Parents need to be more equipped than ever to understand technology, data, and how to have conversations with your child about these topics before an incident occurs.
