The A in Awaken stands for: Acceptance

Acceptance, in the context of psychological health and wellbeing means acknowledging and embracing your thoughts, emotions, experiences, and circumstances without trying to change, resist, or deny them.

It’s a mindset of compassion, empathy, openness and non-judgment towards the present moment, which has several implications for mental health.

Acceptance allows individuals to experience and process difficult emotions, rather than suppressing or avoiding them.

When we constantly resist or reject parts of ourselves or our experiences, it creates inner tension and conflict. Acceptance, can support with reducing this internal conflict, promoting a sense of inner peace and harmony.

Ultimately when we move to a position of acceptance it means adopting a compassionate, non-resistant approach to our thoughts and experiences, which can lead to more emotional stability, personal growth, and increase overall well-being.

K- knowledge

The “K” in Awaken is all about sharing knowledge. Awaken holistic therapies aims to share knowledge in relation to wellbeing practices and discussing techniques that contribute to enhancing physical, mental and emotional health.
Our wellbeing circles include discussing healthy habits, coping mechanisms and stress management techniques.

You are the best person to know what you need and what you don’t need but sometimes we can supress this knowledge because we are on auto pilot, feeling overwhelmed and burnt out or feel like we do not have time.

Let’s learn to take a pause to reset and remind ourselves on the knowledge we hold and share this with each other.

During our circles we spend time thinking about how time can be protected to these practices as this can empower individuals to make informed choices to take proactive steps in improving overall wellbeing.

You matter. Your life physical and mental health matters. What you want from life matters.

Awaken Holistic therapies is designed around the “Eastern Body, Western mind” framework. This is the integration of eastern philosophies and practices of the body with western psychological concepts and understanding of the mind.

The idea to run these classes was born through the realisation that we live in a very
competitive and materialistic world and wanting to create safe spaces for people to slow down and reset. We are constantly being bombarded by messages for us to be happy we need to be thinking about work, our house, clothes, cars, holidays… This got me thinking that if we are constantly being driven to perform and out do ourselves, how does this translate to when we show up for ourselves on the yoga mat? For some people it would mean they just won’t do yoga because they perceive themselves as not being fit enough, flexible enough, slim enough, and therefore would supress their desire of even thinking about attending a yoga space and for others they might attend yoga with the goal of wanting to be more flexible, achieving the best backbend or handstand (as we often see on social media).

How can we see yoga as a space to be rather than to perform? How would it feel to come to a yoga space as a way of honouring yourself and your body? How can you use yoga as a space to accept where you are at in that moment? And of course this can change over time and therefore accepting where you are at, as you flow and move through the weeks, months and seasons.

Can yoga teach you to embrace difference and vulnerability? I know I am posing more
questions than answers. Ultimately I am trying to encourage reflections around your
practice by trusting the process and letting go of any expectations you are attaching to your practice. Whilst yoga is renowned for enhancing physical strength and flexibility its deeper purpose is to cultivate a serene and balanced state of mind. So if it has been a while since you’ve been on the mat, start to think beyond the poses and techniques and embrace a practice that firstly nurtures your mind and soul.

As always would love to hear your thoughts so do get in touch ✨

Hi everyone,

As mentioned previously each of the letters in AWAKEN stand for something and each week I am going to share what that is :)

Today I wanted to share what the “E” stands for in energy

Energy or Prana (life force energy) is fundamental to both our physical and psychological wellbeing. Sometimes energy can get stuck in the body leading to emotional distress, fatigue or persisting negative thoughts.

From a psychological perspective unresolved emotions can be avoided or suppressed which in the short term can serve as a way of coping with difficult feelings but can lead to the body holding onto the unresolved, which over time can show up as physical symptoms such as chronic pain, tension in the back or shoulders, digestive problems or sleeping difficulties.

The awaken woman’s wellness circles will be integrating approaches that combine physical practices of gentle movement, pranayama (breathing exercises) and discussions of therapeutic techniques aiming to maintain and restore the harmonious flow of energy and promoting overall psychological health and balance.

What helps you shift blocked energy and feel more energised?

N is for Nurture

Nurturing ourselves is crucial for maintaining mental, physical, psychological, and emotional wellbeing. It can encompass a range of practices which are tailored to increase self-care, compassion, and acceptance.

Self-nurture is rooted in attachment theory and by understanding our attachment styles we can develop more healthier ways of relating with ourselves and others.

Nurturing ourselves is so important as it supports our mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and low mood. It can increase self-worth as you are prioritising your relationship with self. When you nurture yourself, it has a direct impact on your physical health as it would involve paying attention to your food, exercise and rest. Regular self-care supports to build resilience as you will not be running from an empty tank so you can be better equipped to deal with life’s challenges. Taking care of yourself can also improve productivity and increase creativity as you are providing yourself space to recharge and reset. When we take care of ourselves this will have a direct impact on all our relationships.

Our woman’s wellness circles will be reflecting on nurture and in particular be exploring themes from attachment theory which was originally developed by John Bowlby and further explored by Mary Ainsworth. Our early experiences often lead to internalised models of care, where individuals learn to nurture themselves in ways they were nurtured by their caregivers. Those with “secure” attachment style are more likely to self-care because they have learned to value themselves. For those with insecure attachment styles, nurturing yourself can serve as a “reparenting”, where you actively work towards self-care practices so you can begin to heal and form healthier internal models care and perhaps start to address any unmet needs from your relationships.

We really look forward to welcoming you to the next Awaken Woman’s wellness circles

What comes first motivation or action?

This has been an ongoing debate and I’m sure many of us put things off until we are in the mood, have the energy, feel motivated or interested to do something.

What if we do something that we have been putting off and say we are going to do it for 5 minutes and if after that five minutes you no longer want to continue you can stop and not feel bad about it. If I clean my kitchen for five minutes most likely I will want to continue because I can see the result and that makes me want to do more. So for me Action= motivation which equals more action…

What comes first in your life motivation or action?

If you have been putting something off recently why don’t you try and approach it with the five minute rule and see whether starting an activity precedes motivation ✨

Would love to hear what no longer want to put off… For me it’s using social media, I want to try my best to show up more ✨
