From Stuck in a Chair in a Care Home to Making Pan-Fried Salmon & Veg at Home A Six Week Transformation Story

This has been one of the biggest rehab projects OT4Life has taken on to date and what a turnaround it’s been.

A lovely lady in her 90s, always fiercely independent, ended up in hospital after an infection. From there, she was moved into a care home the plan was for her to “see out her days” there.

Her family and she herself were not ready to accept that.

They contacted me asking for urgent help, and put their full trust in me to make it happen. I brought in my partner-in-crime, my brilliant OTA Catherine Griffin, and we got straight to work.

For the first couple of weeks, between the two of us, we visited almost daily, including weekends, providing intensive mobility and transfers rehab. This then progressed into functional transfers, toileting independently, dressing/undressing without help, and building her walking confidence.

I carried out a full environmental analysis of her home to identify potential risks and barriers. From there, we recommended and arranged the right equipment tailored to her needs to maximise safety, independence, and energy conservation once she returned.

Within three weeks of starting, she was ready for the next step of going home. A huge milestone for her, and a real turning point in the project.

Once home, we continued with structured follow-up support. The focus was on keeping her at home. O this we focused on consolidating her skills, maintaining safe mobility, and gradually increasing the complexity of her daily activities. This approach not only kept her safe it allowed her to flourish.

Yesterday, at what became our final rehab session, she proudly cooked a pan-fried salmon with vegetables, completely independently. It looked (and smelled) incredible.

It just proves life doesn’t have to stop at 90. With the right input, it can be the start of a whole second wind and a brand new chapter.

I now have capacity for one more intensive rehab client if you, or someone you know, is ready for a transformation like this, get in touch.

Some of you may know I enjoy spending time in the garden. I love keeping on top of the lawn, flower beds and trees — especially the Mediterranean and Japanese ones. While pruning back and repotting my wife’s peace lily today, I had a bit of an epiphany.

Starting and running a business and growing and maintaining a garden have more in common than you might think. Both take a lot of effort at the beginning. They both make you learn new skills and push you to test what you know. Sometimes you have to strip things back, make changes, and even sacrifice something short term to help it grow into something better. But above all, they take you on a journey. A journey that starts from nothing and turns into something beautiful, you can truly be proud of.

At OT4Life we might not be professional gardeners, but the journey of building an independent OT service and my own little garden do share a lot of the same lessons. And when it comes to growing a solid client base and working with a wide range of patients, just like bringing in a good gardener to care for something you value, you can expect the same care, quality and pride in what we do from OT4Life — for your clients, their families and the teams supporting them.

You know we love feedback at OT4life but Not all feedback comes from clients sometimes it’s from someone you’ve never even met face to face...

A few weeks ago, a lovely graduate OT reached out for help prepping for her first interview. I didn’t know her, but we took some time going through her presentation, slide by slide, and I gave her advice on mobility assessments and interview prep. She offered to pay but I refused.

Why? Because kindness costs nothing, and supporting those starting out in our profession matters.

Didn’t think anything of it but This week, I received this:

“To Aaron OT4Life
I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to you! I reached out to you recently having never met & asked for some advice around mobility assessments and OT interview help which you were incredibly generous to provide for me. I even offered to pay for your time but you wouldn’t accept…”

*“You patiently went through my presentation, slide by slide, & helped me with anything I missed / was unsure of, and thankfully I got the job! My very first OT job! Thank you for your time, kindness, experience + advice! I will pay the same generosity forward in the future!”
— Laura 😊

Congratulations Laura I’m sure youll be an asset to the profession and this is what it’s all about. Helping others rise. not for a favour or for a fee just doing the right thing in the hope that kindness will be repeated someday

When is a lanyard not a lanyard?

When it’s helping someone regain their independence of course!

Today in the world of OT4Life, myself and Cat our esteemed OTA have been working hard alongside a lady preparing to return home after a long period in respite care.

One of her biggest barriers? Lacking confidence to get up and use the commode overnight. She’s been worried about losing her balance when pulling her trousers back up.

Rather than settle for that, we got creative. Using nothing more than a standard lanyard, we introduced a simple solution: a makeshift thigh strap that stops clothing dropping too low, helping her avoid that awkward bend that she feels puts her at risk of falls.

With a bit of practice, she’s already got the hang of it and is feeling ready to take the next step towards getting home.

It’s often the smallest ideas that make the biggest difference.

OT problem solving in real life: this is what being a private it’s all about.

If your service or setting could use external support with moving and handling or creative rehab solutions like this, feel free to reach out for a chat or a coffee!

Who says OT is a bunch of basket weavers whose main skillset revolves around arts and crafts? Nonsense!!!!
Well…. I sadly succumbed to the age old stereotype last night. I thought “outside the box” (pardon the pun) to make the iconic OT4life logo for a table topper in anticipation of the 🤝🏼 SAM Networking and Marketing 🤝🏼 expo in 15 days’ time.
