Today marks the start of Dying Matters Week, an annual campaign led by Hospice UK to encourage open conversations to help people plan for end-of-life, reduce anxiety and improve support. 💚

Over the coming days our Outreach Team will be joining forces with The Prince of Wales Hospice The Kirkwood and Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust to share more information about hospice care, dispel myths and break the stigma around death and dying (see image below for where they will be popping up!)

Our Legacies and In-Memory Fundraiser Maggie will also be sharing updates throughout the week on our social media channels, with the support of our local solicitors Ison Harrison Solicitors , Solicitors and JWP Solicitors, discussing commonly asked questions around Will-writing and highlighting our year-round Will Writing Services, tune in this week for more. 💚

The Truth 💚

Working or volunteering in a hospice is incredibly rewarding. Our staff and volunteers often describe it as a privilege to support people at such an important time in their lives. The environment is full of compassion, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose – whether working directly with patients and families or supporting our wider teams such as fundraising, finance or in our shops.

One week ago our fantastic fundraising heroes headed to the capital to take on the iconic London Marathon, and what an amazing job they did! 💚🎉

Completing the gruelling 26.2 mile course in the spring sunshine is worthy of applause in itself, but collectively the team also raised over £20,000 for Wakefield Hospice – incredible work, thank you all for your amazing support. 💚

A big thank you to Robert & Terry Gunn and Brian & Eileen Rose who visited the hospice earlier this week with the donation of this beautifully restored bench to take pride of place in our hospice gardens. 💐🌳

Terry was supported at Wakefield Hospice last month and the “Gunns & Roses” kindly donated the bench as a “small thank you for the incredible support she received.” 💚

Robert: 🗣“When Terry was admitted to the hospice she told me she’d ‘had enough’, but with the love and support shown from Wakefield Hospice, two weeks later she was saying ‘I’m glad I’m alive’ as she was discharged – we are so grateful for their truly marvelous care and support.”

Our Donation Centre is open all weekend and we would love to give your quality preloved items a second chance whilst helping to raise vital funds for local hospice care.💚

Wishing our incredible supporter Phil Eggett the very best of luck as he continues on his Camino De Santiago trail in memory of his wife Liz.

Last year Phil completed the 135 mile North Wales Pilgrim’s Way, raising £1500 for Wakefield Hospice. 💚

🗣“During Liz’s final days, Wakefield Hospice cared for her with extraordinary kindness, dignity and compassion. They also looked after our family in ways that we will always be grateful for.

“This walk is simply my way of giving something back — and of course carrying Liz with me as I go.”

Fit for the Future update: End of Month One! 👷

We can’t believe it’s been a full month since our Fit for the Future project began!

Over the past 4 weeks, the team have been working incredibly hard getting the hospice ready for our biggest transformation project in a generation 👏

Highlights in April include:
🛠 Setting up contractor compound
🏗 Strip out and demolition work
💦 Drainage investigations
👷‍♀️ Variety of structural work (walls, windows, ceilings and floors)

Check out the photos below to see just how much progress has already been made!

Throughout the project – which will see a transformation of our Inpatient Unit from 8 bedrooms and 2 shared bays to 16 state-of-the-art en-suite bedrooms with improved facilities throughout – care continues to be provided on a lower bed capacity, with the project split into two phases to accommodate this 💚

£30,000 before 30! 😮

Our amazing long-term supporter China Milner has been fundraising for Wakefield Hospice for the past 8 years since her beloved mum, Geraldine, was cared for in the hospice 💚

To date China has incredibly raised over £28,000, and has set herself the challenge of making it £30,000 before her 30th birthday this year with two upcoming events:

Wishing the very best of luck to the amazing team taking on the 10th anniversary of the Overbury Cycling Challenge!

This year the team are cycling from London to Bruges, travelling 320 miles across three gruelling days, raising funds for Wakefield Hospice, Shooting Star Children’s Hospice and the MOE Foundation! 💚

The team have already raised over £14,500 – an incredible effort – thank you all so much for your incredible support 👏

A big thank you to The Hospital Saturday Fund for their very kind £10,000 grant towards ceiling hoist tracks as part of the upgrade to our Inpatient Unit this year! 🙌

The installation of ceiling hoist tracks allow for safer movement for patients when moving between the bed, chairs or the bathroom, and can really help to improve overall comfort for patients during their stay.

An amazing donation, thank you so much 💚
