I'm sure most of you will now be aware of the extraordinary news that NHS England is planning to end funding to a further 3 hyperbaric units leaving only 3 operational (all in the South of England).

This is potentially disastrous for any divers suffering from diving related injury in the North of the country. Though many casualties will arrive at a chamber by air or ambulance, the more mild cases may present by car, themselves, to be assessed (not all require tereatment). A drive of 8+ hours would be somewhat off-putting to these individuals and availability of coastguard / ambulance resources may severe impact those who are at significant risk...

Support from local divers thus far has been overwhelming but please consider writing to your MP to express your concern about this dangerous decision by NHSE.

Today we saw the impact of the closure of Oban Hyperbaric Unit with a diving emergency from Scotland being airlifted all the way to us for assessment / treatment..

There are now just 8 operational Hyperbaric Units in the UK providing round the clock emergency treatment for SCUBA divers and several non-diving conditions.

Very pleased to join members of Merseyside Sub Aqua Club on a tour of the North West Emergency Recompression Unit at ESTC.

20 club members learned more about the dangers of decompression illness and how to mitigate the risks of this. They then toured the impressive facility and then finished off the morning with a 'dry dive' down to a depth of 40m, in one of the hyperbaric chambers, to experience the effects of nitrogen narcosis in a safe environment.

Highly recommended for all SCUBA divers whether new to the sport or seasoned!

ESTC is not just a great multipurpose training facility but a fantastic resource for the community.

NWDMS is proud to work alongside some extremely dedicated and highly skilled people who were invaluable during the tragic events of last week. Our thoughts continue to be with the families of those affected.

Just over a week ago, we learnt about the horrific events on the M53. Our heart felt condolences go out to the children, parents, families and teachers who were involved in the bus crash on the M53 on Friday 29th September.

We where alerted to the incident and attended scene alongside MerSAR to provide some assistance wherever required, it became very clear there was a large volume casualties to be managed and as a result we offered our services. We made a suggestion that the casualties could be managed at our centre on the Wirral. All of our ESTC staff and MerSAR volunteers pulled together, under the guidance of North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, and set about triaging the walking wounded in the centre utilising our on site Clinical Suite, classrooms, Bistro and waiting rooms where all Emergency Service personell came together to help get casualties triaged before being given further medical advice and also reunited with parents where ever practically possible. The last casualty was cleared at 15:30 and a debrief was conducted by the Ambulance Service to ensure all persons involved were safe and well with an enforces on policies and procedures.

We are proud to have provided help and support at this very difficult time and again, our thoughts are with all those involved and also with the families of Jessica and Stephen who sadly lost their lives in this trajic incident.
