Each tribe has its own legend or story about how they came to use Kambo. The most prevalent legend regarding the origins of Kambo comes from Brazil. This Kaxinawá legend tells that the Indians of the tribe were very ill and their medicine man (Pajé in Brazil) had done everything that was possible to cure them. All medicinal herbs known were used, but none helped. Under the effect of the sacred plant medicine Ayahausca, he entered the forest and whilst there received a visit from a female spirit of the forest.
She brought in her hands a frog, from which she took a white secretion, and taught the Pajé how to apply it. Returning to the tribe and following the guidelines that he had received the Pajé was able to cure his brothers and sisters. From then on he was known as Pajé Kampu or Kampum. After his death, it is said his spirit lived on in the frog where it continued its mission to protect the health of those who defend the forest. The secretion became known as Kambo but in some tribes it is called Sapo, Dow-Kiet, Kampu or Vacina da Floresta. Its usage spread and for thousands of years, Kambo has been used as medicine by the Kaxinawá people, and by many other indigenous groups including the Amahuaca, Katukina, Kulina, Yawanawá, Matses, Marubo and Mayoruna. it is still used widely amongst indigenous people in the Amazon to this day although the rituals vary from tribe to tribe.

Mama Kambo will be hosting a 4 day retreat in North Wales spring 2024, Specifically working with my beloved medicine. 🐸

Due to the intensity of this retreat the will be a interview process prior to you booking on.

While the kambo frog secretion contains many different types of molecules, the most notable are it’s diversity of peptides. These peptides present in a wide variety of forms and analogues within specific peptide families. A peptide is a chain of amino acids linked together. Similar to a protein, a peptide is classified based on the length of the chain of amino acids. You can kind of think of them as very short-chained, teeny proteins that are usually 5-20 amino acids long.

Peptides are important for human physiology and biology in general. Many of our hormones and signalling molecules are peptides, including endorphins, oxytocin, and insulin. Peptides in animals and plants are very common, especially as defense mechanisms in anurans (frogs and toads), reptiles, molluscs, crustaceans, insects and birds. There are several major classes of peptide families found in kambo, as described below.

Dermorphins and Deltorphins

Dermorphins and Deltorphins are opioid-like peptides contained in kambo with Dermorphins having a high binding affinity for Mu opioid receptors, and Deltorphins having a high binding affinity for delta opioid receptors. Both of these classes of peptides have strong analgesic, pain-blocking properties and have a potency of up to 1000 times that of native endorphins and 30-40 times the potency of morphine.

Despite their potent opioid receptor activity, neither dermorphin or deltorphins show evidence of dependence or abuse potential. This may be attributed to the strength of the peptides reducing the necessary dosage . In one human study, dermorphin outperformed morphine as a post-operative pain drug. Dermorphin has been used illegally in horse racing for its ability to block pain in injured horses.

Deltorphin shows evidence of having gastroprotective effects that are mediated by interaction with the vagal nerve implying that this opioid peptide may have neuroregulatory properties.

Dermaseptins

The Dermaseptins may be the most fascinating of all the peptides found in kambo. Dermaseptins have incredible antibiotic activity and have been found to be effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Studies have explored dermaseptins ability to destroy on contact pathogens such as E.coli, salmonella, gonorrhea, herpes viruses, HIV, candida albicans, and even malaria-causing protozoans. Dermaseptins have a promising future as medications given their ability to kill pathogens selectively without harming animal cells.

Dermaseptins are also extremely effective at killing cancer cells and inhibiting their growth. Some dermaseptins such as adrenoregulin have also been found to affect adenosine agonist activity and may increase permeability of the blood brain barrier, making it of interest to drug delivery development.

Phllyomedusin

Phyllomedusin is a peptide that interacts with the tachykinin system in mammals. This system is important for regulating the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. Phyllomedusin also causes the rapid contraction of intestinal muscles and is a potent vasodilator, which may also lead to an increase in vascular permeability through the blood-brain barrier.

Phyllokinin

Phyllokinin interacts with the bradykinnin system, which causes relaxation of smooth muscle. It is also a vasodilator and may influence blood-brain permeability. This peptide causes a rapid drop in blood pressure.

Phyllocaerulein

Phyllocaerulein stimulates the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland while causing gall bladder contractions and secretion of gastric and pancreatic juices. Phyllocaerulein and phyllokinnin contribute to hypotensive effects of kambo and why some people’s blood pressure drops, causing temporary fainting.

Sauvagine

Sauvagine influences cortico-releasing-hormone system and the pituitary-adrenal axis, which is important for modulating stress, mood and impulsive behavior. Sauvagine also causes intense tachycardia, or increase of heart rate.

Part of the mystery and the magic of the kambo secretion is the complexity of the interaction of the peptides in the substance with the human body. While companies will likely continue to patent and bring to market drugs that are based on these thes phyllomedusa Bicolour peptides, no lab will ever be able to truly recreate the magnificent intelligence of the frog’s secretion in its entirety. The cocktail of components is worth more than the sum of its parts.

💧🩸Visit sacred springs
It is one of the greatest mysteries of the Isle of Avalon that two different healing springs, one touched red with iron, the other white with calcite, should rise within a few feet of each other from the caverns beneath Glastonbury Tor.

🩸Chalice Well
The quiet gardens of Chalice Well & spring. The gardens are enfolded in the vale between Chalice Hill and the Tor and the garden’s landscape naturally rises upward from the bottom of the garden toward the well head at the top.

It is a garden of many ‘rooms’ each with different qualities, features and planting, but all combine to create a living sanctuary of healing, sanctity and peace.

The gardens are a place of meditation and quiet reflection, a chance to leave the world behind, a pause.

The gardens offer a respite from the everyday, a place for connection, reflection and renewal. Each area of the gardens is distinctly different – ranging from the wide open space of the meadow, to the intimate space around the Wellhead itself. Throughout the garden there are numerous places to sit and enjoy nature, the constant flow of the water, the changing seasons, and the spiritual presence which is so central to the Chalice Well.

“The more love we reflect and share with one another, the greater will be the supply available to us: a supply that is infinite, boundless, never failing and eternal. When the truth of this realisation is recognised and utilised we shall be on the first lap of the road leading to the arrival of “Heaven on Earth”.

💧The White Springs
In honour of the Spirit of the White Spring, a Temple has been created here in gratitude for the gift of pure water. A Victorian built Well House that nestles beneath Glastonbury Tor was ideal for this purpose. Cavernous and set apart, in blackness or candle lit, it is very enigmatic and a wonderful contrast to the sunlit gardens of Chalice Well of the Red Spring. The interior consists of three domed vaults 16ft high, with beautiful, bowed floors – like the hull of a boat moored at the portal to the Otherworld. With its constant sound of the perpetually flowing water, it is a unique and sacred space.

It is said that the combe was an entrance to a system of caves beneath the Tor and the Underworld of the Celtic tradition. This Underworld was the home of Gwyn ap Nudd, King of the Fairies and Lord of Anwnn. The Welsh Saint Collen was said to be Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey in the 7th century and on his retirement, he retreated to a life of contemplation beside a spring at the foot of Tor. It was St. Collen that banished Gwyn and his actions amounted to an exorcism of the underworld realm. Many people believe that that the Fey Folk simply shifted to another dimension and still reside in the Tor. The fairy dropping wells as described by George Wright would have helped to continue the belief that this was indeed a place touched by the Fey.

Here in the White Spring Temple you will have the opportunity to bathe in the sacred waters.

🌹 The Abby
The grounds of Glastonbury Abbey emanate a sense of calm and peace; it is truly a magical place. A tranquil setting where you can discover the stories, explore the 36 acres of grounds with some incredible mother trees. This is the perfect place to share a picnic.

Glastonbury Abbey held a prominent and sacred position in the Christian world. Still today revered as holy grounds, the Abbey Ruins are the site of the first Christian Church in Europe, and are reputed to be the burial site of Joseph of Arimathea, The Virgin Mary, Saint Patrick and King Arthur.

🌹 Closing ceremony at the Tor.
This iconic and evocative landmark offers magnificent views of the Somerset Levels, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales. Steeped in history and legend, excavations at the top of the Tor have revealed the plans of two superimposed churches of St Michael, of which only a 15th-century tower remains.

Not only is this a beautiful There are many myths and legends associated with the Tor. It has been linked to Avalon, and also with King Arthur and the Tor is associated with Gwyn ap Nudd, who was the first ‘Lord of the Underworld’, and later ‘King of the Fairies’. The Tor came to be represented as an entrance to Annwn or Avalon, the land of the fairies.
