This month I have given notice on my space in Vale Park and from mid-Feb I’m putting Movement Restored on hiatus.

It’s not an easy decision and I’ve been thinking about it for at least a year and now is just the right time to move on.

I’m involved with a few other projects that are really taking off and there just isn’t enough time or headspace for me to do everything.

I still love this work, I still believe in the impact it can have and I feel incredibly grateful that I’ve been able to do it, on my own terms, for so long.

I’ll miss it and I’ll miss all my clients past and present and everyone I’m in contact with through this work. I’ll miss spending my days in this incredible park and marching up and down the prom everyday as my commute.

Right now, for me personally, I feel like I can have a bigger impact elsewhere. That’s all it’s ever been about for me, supporting others and having a positive impact in my community, so I’ll be doing more of that.

Movement Restored will change a great deal without my New Brighton home. The long-term plan is to focus more on education, workshops and that sort of things, but we’ll see. I’m always up for a bit of teaching or putting something on so get in touch if you would like to explore that.

I’m resisting the urge to type out an Oscars style thank you speech but there are so many people you have been incredibly supportive over the years.

Clients who have become friends, local business owners who have offered advice, gyms that gave me space to work from right at the start (which essentially vouched for me in a very crowed space), everyone at Vale who have always looked after me and anyone who liked and shared posts and supported me in any way at all.

Please know that all of it is appreciated.

I’ve also got a bit of kit to get rid of so check out my story if you’re looking for anything movement and anatomy related.

If you’d like to stay in touch, you can find me and

I’ve got a few weeks left and a little bit of availability if you wanted to squeeze a session in or have a chat about something.

Stay in touch and hopefully see you around.

🙏❤️

I ran the London Marathon last week.

I’ve always fancied running a marathon.

Partly for the personal challenge but also because I work with a lot of runners.

Helping them with gait, mobility, strength, recovery.

And while I’m very confident in my work, and everything I do is backed by science, there was always a little thing in the back of my head questioning the fact that I was helping people to achieve something that I hadn’t truly tested myself.

I’ve never ran further than a half and when I got a place in the London ballot, I wasn’t doing any running at all and hadn’t been for a year or two.

So it was a great opportunity to test my systems.

I did all the programming myself and training plans myself.
I did 3 runs per week and 2 gym-based strength sessions.

I used those gym sessions to build strength but in a very specific, running focused way, always thinking about the muscles and joints that need to function well to be able to run efficiently.

I made a point in putting recovery at the centre of all the training that I did and I made sleep, hydration and movement my priority.

And guess what?  It worked.

I started this at 7 months out, my first run was just 2 miles. I didn’t miss a single training session for the whole 7-month training period.

No injuries, not so much as a ni**le.

No issues with stiffness, restriction or loss of mobility.

The marathon itself went to plan. I had a couple of minutes of cramp at mile 23 and some serious chafing from a pair of shorts that hadn’t been tested past 21 miles in very sweaty conditions.

Other than that, all good.  I came home on the same day, took Monday as a day off, back to work on Tuesday, back to the gym on Wednesday.

I’m not saying all this to boast, if I wanted to that I could have told people I was running and posted constant Strava updates the whole time.

I’m just letting you know that what I do works very well and I know this because now I’ve tested it.

If you want to run longer distances, without aches, pains, injuries and all that stuff, then drop me a message to see how I can help.

Voting closes tonight! It only takes a minute and everything you need to know is in the post. Every vote counts and every vote is hugely appreciated!

Massive thanks for all the support so far! ❤️

I NEED YOUR HELP!

Pod Bible Magazine have just opened the voting for their annual listener polls and it would be amazing if you could take a minute to vote for Proper Mental in the Independent category.

I won this last year and it was one of the best things that has happened since I started doing the show.

It’s extra special because it’s voted for by people who listen to the show and the idea that people cared enough to take the time to vote was incredible. It was such a lovely feeling to win, like a huge pat on the back for all the work I’ve put in over almost 3 years.

But the main reason that I want to have another go this year is because Pod Bible is not the sort of channel that you would associate with mental health.

One of the best ways to reach people, spread awareness and make an actual difference, is to talk about mental health outside of the usual mental health spaces.

The people who listen regularly, or follow me here, probably know what mental health is and where to go for help. The hardest bit will always be getting into the ears of someone who doesn’t know about this stuff or any of the amazing people and organisations who can help.

That’s who I want to reach.

That person who is struggling and doesn’t know what’s happening.

Who doesn’t know where to go or what to do.

Who doesn’t have the words for what they are experiencing.

Who thinks it’s only them.

I want to get in the ears of that person, who is giving up on themselves, and I want them to listen and know that they can be ok.

Winning awards puts these conversations about the more challenging aspects of mental health under a whole new spotlight. A spotlight that is usually dominated by celebrities with shows about comedy and entertainment and more palatable topics.

I don’t want to be palatable. I want people to listen and feel seen.

There’s a below to get the voting page. It takes less than a minute and you don’t need to sign up or register or even vote in the other categories.

I would be incredibly grateful if you could help me out with this!

It would mean a great deal if you could take a minute to vote for Proper Mental Podcast in the independent category of the Pod Bible Magazine end of year polls.

Indie can mean a lot of different things in the podcast world. It can be a show like mine with one person who books guests, records, edits, promotes and everything else or it can be a well known host with a huge following, a marketing budget, a production team and a load of famous mates.

So it really is a case of every vote counts!

The aim of the show is to help people and to do that it needs to reach as many people as possible. Awards like this make a big difference and help me to spread the word.

You can vote for Proper Mental on the link in this post.

Scroll through the categories until you get to the ‘Oh My Pod’ section and type Proper Mental in to the box. No need to vote in every category or sign up to anything. It only takes a minute.

Huge thanks for your help!

If you keep asking your body will keep responding.

It’s what the human body is supposed to do.

It’s the reason why we’re still around after a couple of million years.

Adapting to environment.

Change up the environment and you change.

You’re not too old.

It’s not too late.

It’s what you’re designed to do.

So if your body can’t do something you just need to find the best way to teach how to do that thing.

Helping you to do that is pretty much what my job is.

Take this post as a sign to try something different if what you’re doing isn’t working.

Or to take action if you’ve been putting it off.

Pain is a signal.

Injury is a coping strategy.

They should both be short term and if they’re not then it’s time to act.

I sat and wrote this list in one go.

I could probably write the same amount again if I sat for a bit longer.

I’m not sure the hard way is the best way to learn stuff.

Hopefully I’ve learned it so my clients don’t have to.

What would you add to (or take off) this list?

What have you learned the hard way?

Let me know in the comments!

If your body isn’t able to do something that you want it to then you can work on that.

If you are experiencing pain on a regular basis then you can work on that.

If there is an activity that you would like to get better at but your body doesn’t want to do it then you can work on that.

You don’t have to settle for a life of pain or restriction.

You don’t have to miss out on things or sit on the sidelines.

A goal and a strategy to get there.

That’s all you need to change things.

And it doesn’t matter if your goal is considered a big one or a small one.

It’s the impact on your quality of life that’s ultimately the most important thing.

When you lose confidence in your body it can really take a toll.

It’s the lack of trust and second guessing that becomes an issue.

It’s stops you from moving forward, it causes you to doubt the process and the work that you’ve done.

Part of my role is helping you to understand why your body can or can’t do something and then put the relevant steps in place to change that.

Part of that process is about changing how you feel about your body and working to trust it again.

It’s important that you know that your body will be there for you when you need it to be.

Once we build confidence we can gain a lot more momentum.

That’s something I can help you with.

VCTC Level 3 and Level 4 Sports Massage.

Sports massage is a natural therapy that has been used to treat muscular problems for thousands of years. It's an ancient art being used in modern times. It works on many levels and is an incredibly versatile and effective way of taking care of the human body.

Massage gives you time. It gives you space. It reconnects your mind to your body to restart the healing process. It allows you to focus on you! Improvements in pain and posture keep you positive. On a physical level there’s increased blood flow to help you heal and remove dead cells and waste. More space to stretch or mobilise. It promotes hormone release to help you sleep. It slows your heart rate to calm your nervous system. It saves you time in an already busy life and brings a lot of what the body needs to one place.

I often think the name 'sports massage' is misleading because it's not just for people involved in sports and it's much more specific than standard massage therapy. Sports massage will help anyone deal with the effects of physical activity, which is anything that puts a physical strain on the body. Running, walking, cycling, lifting. Jumping, punching, kicking. Reaching, bending, kneeling.
