20 Years of NHS Bowel Cancer Screening –

ℹ️ What You Need to Know

April 2026 marks a significant milestone - 20 years of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, a service that has helped save thousands of lives through earlier detection and timely treatment.

Bowel cancer remains one of the most common cancers in the UK, but screening continues to be one of our most effective tools. The at-home FIT kit is quick, simple, and free and it enables us to identify potential issues at the earliest possible stage, when treatment has the greatest impact.

πŸ™‹πŸ½ Who is invited?

Anyone aged 50 to 74 and registered with a GP is invited to take part in the bowel cancer screening programme. Your FIT kit is sent directly to your home address and includes everything you need, with full instructions. You will receive a kit every two years.

If you were born after 1 June 1974, you should receive your first test kit when you turn 50. If you were born before 1 June 1974, you will receive your first kit when you turn 52.

βœ… Keep your GP details up to date

To make sure your test kit reaches you, it’s important that your GP has your correct:

β€’ Name
β€’ Date of birth
β€’ Address
β€’ Phone number
β€’ Email address

Please contact your GP practice if any of your details have changed.

πŸ§“πŸ» Aged 75 or over?

If you’re 75 or older, you won’t receive automatic invitations, but you can still take part in bowel cancer screening every two years by requesting a FIT kit.

☎️ Need help or more information?

If you have questions about bowel cancer screening or think you should have received a kit, contact the free helpline: 0800 707 60 60.

This helpline can be used to request a new test kit, ask questions about the process, or update personal details.

Taking part in bowel cancer screening could save your life, please don’t ignore your invitation. πŸ™

Thinking about cutting down on alcohol but not sure where to start?

Healthy Oxon suggests that if you answer yes to this question you could watch their new video
8 simple ways to take control of your drinking.

Even a small reduction in alcohol can lead to more energy, healthier skin, and improved sleep.
Over time, cutting back can also support better mood and clearer thinking and reduce the risk of serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease.

Small changes can make a big difference. πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ

With a Bank Holiday fast approaching – We would like to remind you to order and collect your repeat prescriptions in plenty of time. πŸ’ŠπŸ’ŠπŸ’Š

Do also check in with vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours that they have the medications they need.

Please see details of which pharmacies are open over the Bank Holiday weekend - many will be closed. It would be wise to check the pharmacy is open before travellling to one if you need to go over the weekend.

You can easily order repeat prescriptions via the NHS App or get in touch with your General Practice online or in person to make sure you have what you need.

If you do run out of your medication, NHS 111 online can offer advice on how to get an emergency supply to see you through until Mill Stream Surgery is open again. πŸ™‚

Would you like to come and work with our friendly, dedicated team?

Are you, your adult child or someone you know wanting to work for a gap year? πŸ™‹πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

We are an innovative practice where we focus on quality care for our patients, education, and teamwork.

πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸ’» We are looking for an enthusiastic student who is wanting to work during their gap year.

🩺 This would ideally suit a student who is wanting to study medicine or for a health-related carer.

πŸ’‰ The work will be varied and there is an opportunity to train to do phlebotomy and take bloods later in the year which is great preparation for medical school or nurse training.

We are all delighted to know that Emilia our current gap year student was offered a place to study at her first-choice medical school from September 2026. πŸ‘πŸ»

Are currently a sixth form student?

Would you like to work with us during your gap year?

If the answer is yes or you know someone who might respond with yes, please check out the Job vacancies section on our website.
