Martha’s Rule – applies to acute inpatient settings.

More than 10,000 calls have made to the Martha’s rule helplines in the first sixteen months of the scheme, helping thousands of patients benefit from changes in their care and potentially saving lives.

Martha’s Rule helps detect deterioration in hospital patients early. It gives both patients and their families the right to call for a rapid review if they are concerned about a loved one’s condition – or their own – is getting worse.

Staff can also ask for a review from a different team if they are concerned appropriate action is not being taken.

March is Ovarian cancer awareness month

Ovarian cancer can be difficult to detect in the early stages, due to many symptoms also being associated with other, much less serious illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome.

If left undiagnosed and untreated, ovarian cancer can become more serious over time.

What are the main symptoms of ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer has four main symptoms:
Persistent stomach pain.
Peristent bloating.
Difficulty eating/feeling full more quickly.
Needing to wee more frequently.

Ovarian cancer symptoms might include:
Indigestion.
Back pain.
Changes in bowel habits (going more often or a lot less)
Unexplained weight loss.
Post menopausal vaginal bleeding.
Extreme tiredness.

Keep a record of symptoms and make an appointment to see the GP if you think you may have signs of ovarian cancer.

Rare Diseases Day – “Bringing us Together”🫶🏻

On Saturday 28th February 2026, it was Rare Diseases Day, a chance to raise awareness or rare conditions and the challenges that people living with them may face.

There are thousands of rare diseases, many of which are life long and can affect people in different ways. Even though each condition is rare on it own, they affect many families in the community.

This year’s theme “Bringing us Together”, highlights the importance of awareness, understanding and support for people with rare diseases.

If you, a family member, or someone you know is affected by a rare condition, we are here to help you with referrals, care planning and co-ordinating support.

For more information about rare conditions please see:
