How Secondary Lymphedema affects daily life & a solution worth considering…

Secondary Lymphedema impacts sufferers daily not only because of the discomfort the extra fluid carried in the affected limb causes but also because clothes do not fit anymore, self-image is distorted, doing simple tasks like carrying the shopping or lifting the shower hose or even driving become painful and sometimes impossible.

Many GPs will not tell you simply because they are not aware of the technique but Reflexology Lymph Drainage (aka RLD) developed by Sally Kay helps redirecting the fluid that builds up where the damage occurred to other parts of the lymphatic system, easing the weight and therefore the discomfort and difficulty to get on with daily tasks most of us take for granted.

To book a RLD session, click the link in the bio or message me for more information.

As a Certified RLD Practitioner, I have seen how this technique improves my client’s quality of life.

Which type of cancer is linked to secondary lymphedema?

In a nutshell, despite the focus this month on Breast Cancer, the answer is ANY cancer that affects lymph nodes.

It is worth mentioning that both women and men can be diagnosed with breast cancer and therefore develop the condition.

Since lymph nodes are found all around the body, other types of cancer such as vulval, cervical and womb cancers in women, bladder, and even neck and head cancers can lead to secondary lymphedema.

Since it is often linked to cancer treatments or surgery, being aware of this condition is key to detect it early. Sadly there is no cure but Reflexology Lymph Drainage is one very effective way to manage the condition and improve your quality of life.

Let me know in the comments how this condition has affected you the most. Take care x

What is Secondary Lymphedema and how is it linked to Breast Cancer?

Secondary Lymphedema (also spelt Lymphoedema) often results from damage to the lymphatic system.

If you had surgery involving the removal of lymphatic glands or had chemotherapy or radiotherapy following a cancer diagnosis especially in the abdominal (tummy) or axillary (armpits) regions, you run the risk of developing Secondary Lymphedema.

In the case of Breast Cancer, because it is often common to remove or target axillary glands to remove tumors, Cancer survivors often develop the condition at some point post treatment - sometimes even several years later. Note that infections can also lead to the condition.

By opposition, Primary Lymphedema is often inherited and can develop at any stage of life.

What if you've been told nothing can be done?

You've been diagnosed with Secondary Lymphodema and now, it really affects your quality of life.

“Learn to live with the swelling” was the general advice!

But your new normal is this…

Lifting a kettle is painful.
Holding the shower hose, carrying the groceries, driving… is difficult.
Wearing your favourite top or dress is a thing of the past.
And your confidence is at a long time low.

Too many women recovering from Breast Cancer treatments and/or surgery received that devastating advice. Yet, what they haven’t been told - probably because sadly even the doctors weren’t aware themselves - is that there is a way to regain some quality of life…

REFLEXOLOGY LYMPH DRAINAGE isn’t a cure but a proven technique to reduce swelling and therefore the pain while improving the quality of life of Secondary Lymphodema sufferers.

Sally Kay who developed this technique has gathered scientific evidence of its efficacy and with the help of all the reflexology therapists she has trained (and still trains) continues to spread awareness of her work.

If you’re a breast cancer survivor or know someone who is and has developed this condition, feel free to reach out for more information because YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SUFFER IN SILENCE. Relief is available. Not only is it completely natural and very effective, it is also measurable and ever so relaxing!

Message me for more information. xx Carole

Practice what you preach!

My right shoulder has been quite painful for a while, not entirely sure what caused the issue in the first place as it could be a number of things and even more probably a combination of things…

Several long car journeys driving to France to go and visit my mum in hospital.
Constant pulling from my lovely furry friend.
Increased hours at my desk doing zoom calls with coaching clients (my second passion business after reflexology)
Moving furniture around

Whatever the cause, I became more and more aware first while doing yoga, then simply while sitting and this morning the pain actually woke me up at 5am.

I have the tools, why didn’t I use them earlier!!! 🤪

…wide awake I simply used RLD on myself. RLD is short for Reflexology Lymph Drainage - one of my favourite reflexology techniques, quick and effective for pain relief and freeing lymph blockages causing discomfort and often swelling.

The result, a nearly free from pain shoulder after just one short session. I know that all I need to do is treat myself to a second session tonight or over the weekend (because I can 😂) - I may not get the relaxing touch from another therapist but I got the benefits of this amazing technique.

If you want to find out if RLD can help you, comment YES PLEASE!

Ever notice how your muscles feel sore for days after a good gym session or a long run? That’s because of the little waste products your body needs to clear away.
Your lymphatic system is in charge of that clean-up but if it’s sluggish, recovery drags on.

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) helps move lymph more efficiently, allows you to bounce back quicker, feel less sore and get back to doing what you love.

Look after your muscles this September and why not book some RLD, your muscles will thank you!

“Did you know your body may already be dancing with the moon?”
Science shows that while the full moon doesn’t directly change our hormones, its cycle is almost identical to the length of the average menstrual cycle.

Some women naturally find their ovulation syncing with the brightness of the full moon, while others notice their bleeding aligning with the new moon’s darkness.

Why? Because the moon’s light can subtly influence our sleep hormone, melatonin, which in turn talks to the hormones that regulate our cycle. It’s not magic 😉, it’s biology meeting nature. 🌿

So, when you feel more awake, emotional or reflective around a full moon, it’s not “all in your head.” It’s your body remembering its ancient rhythm, once guided by moonlight before artificial lighting disrupted the dance.

Do you have skills you do not use often enough or forgot you had?

I often use the excuse of “I am too busy” to use reflexology on myself. A few days away walking up or down mountains through woods, on uneven grounds from tree roots to various size rocks, grass and sand are a challenge for feet, legs and even backs.

I am so glad I took the time to stop and treat myself to self-care every day. Without RLD (reflexology lymph drainage), I probably would have been too achy to keep up with my boys 🥰
