✨ What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a gentle, manual therapy technique that supports your body’s lymphatic system by enhancing the circulation of fluid (lymph) — helping reduce swelling, support immune function, and improve fluid balance. It’s used in clinical settings to manage conditions like lymphoedema, lipoedema, venous disease and post-operative swelling as well as for general wellness to support relaxation, detoxification and stress reduction 💆‍♀️

Knowing the differences between MLD for medical conditions vs. for general wellness helps ensure that your treatment is being delivered safely, effectively and is tailored to your goals ✨

FAQ - Can a vibration plate help with managing lipoedema symptoms?

👩‍🔬Vibration Plates & Lipoedema: What Does the Research Say?

Vibration plates are often discussed in the lipoedema community as a tool for managing symptoms but the information can sometimes be confusing or misleading.

Here’s what the scientific research and current clinical practice guidelines say about the use of vibration plates in the management of lipoedema symptoms:

💜 Some small studies suggest vibration plates can help reduce pain sensitivity and improve general comfort
💜 When used alongside treatments like manual lymphatic drainage, some people experience improved symptom relief
💜 Vibration plates may improve circulation and muscle activation, which can feel helpful for some individuals

However:
💜 There is no strong evidence for the use of vibration plates in the management of lipoedema symptoms
💜 Vibration plates are not a stand-alone treatment and do not replace the cornerstones of conservative lipoedema management (skin care, compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, appropriate exercise and nutrition)

Important to know:
💜 People with lipoedema can respond differently to the use of different therapies including vibration plates; for some it improves symptoms, others feel no change and some may feel it exacerbates pain and swelling
💜 Incorrect settings or overuse can increase discomfort
💜 Seek advice from a lipoedema therapist before incorporating vibration therapy into your management plan

💡 Bottom line:

Vibration plates are not essential for effective management of lipoedema symptoms but may be a helpful add-on for enhancing patient outcomes like improving pain sensitivity, swelling and general comfort for some people.

Lymphoedema vs. Lipoedema: What is the difference?

Lymphoedema is swelling caused by the accumulation of excessive amounts of protein-rich fluid in the tissues due to a damaged or compromised lymphatic system 💙

Lipoedema is a loose connective tissue disorder that is characterised by bilateral, symmetrical accumulation of adipose (fat) tissue 💜

Both conditions can involve swelling and discomfort but they are not the same!

We offer support to those with lymphoedema and lipoedema, providing comprehensive assessment and tailored management options for both conditions ✨

Think you might be experiencing lymphoedema or lipoedema? We’re here to help!

It’s National Skin Cancer Action Week!

Often called our ‘national cancer’, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, with 2 in 3 Australians developing skin cancer in their lifetime ☀️

The good news? Skin cancer is almost entirely preventable! When the UV index is 3 or above, remember to use all 5 forms of sun protection - Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide 😎

If detected early, skin cancer can be successfully treated so make sure to have your skin checked regularly by a GP or dermatologist 🔬

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀 Breast Cancer Treatment Related Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema, swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system, is a common but often overlooked side effect of breast cancer treatment 🔬

It is estimated that 1 in 5 breast cancer patients will develop breast, chest wall and/or upper limb lymphoedema, often developing gradually over months or even years after treatment 💐

The key to managing lymphoedema is early detection, regular monitoring and intervention! 💪

If you’ve had treatment for breast cancer and are experiencing swelling, heaviness and tenderness in your breast and/or arm, contact us to schedule a call with our lymphoedema physiotherapist to discuss your symptoms and how we can help! 🌸

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀 Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS)/Cording

AWS (or Cording) is a common post-operative complication following axillary lymph node dissection or sentinel node biopsy for treatment of breast cancer.

Characterised by visible or palpable ‘cords’ extending from the axilla down the medial arm, AWS can limit shoulder range of motion, impact daily function and cause significant discomfort.

Early diagnosis and intervention is key to restoring function and preventing long-term restriction.

Are you struggling with AWS after breast cancer surgery? Contact our team to find out how we can help you reduce discomfort and restore function! 🌸
