In recent decades, drugs used to treat malaria infection, including the combination of Artemether and Lumefantrine, have been used for the treatment of other pathologies, such as viral infections, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and other non-malarial infectious diseases.
Recently the antimalarial drugs have received special attention due to the lack of effective antiviral drugs against new emerging viruses, for example, the current pandemic of Coronavirus (COVID-19), we also know that antimalarials have been tried and tested against; HIV, dengue virus, chikungunya virus, Ebola virus, and also in classic infections due to drug-resistant viral strains (i.e., human cytomegalovirus) with some favourable results and lower degree of side effects.

Most recently, Chloroquine has been used against Coronavirus (COVID-19), as an effective treatment, with some promising results, we know that Chloroquine kills plasmodium viva and plasmodium falciparum and is also effective against COVID-19 but the treatment comes with some deleterious side effects, most common are the cardiac problems, various deaths have been reported in New York, during March 2020, as it causes abnormal heart rhythms in the studied population. With regards to Artesunate, it has an endoperoxide ring, which appears to sequester the iron in heam, thus denying iron to the organism and hence, in theory, will be effective in killing COVID-19. We have done some preliminary work with Artemether in Lyme disease and found it effective in killing Babesia. The reported toxicity levels of Artemether and Lumefantrine are significantly low and outweigh the benefits, due to the safety of the compound it is also used in children with Malaria.
As discussed, currently, we have the formulation Artemether 20mg and Lumefantrine 120 mg in 0.5 ml of syrup, as agreed with WHO (a fixed combination of Artemether/ Lumefantrine), which is ready to be tried in COVID-19 infected patients or I will be happy to formulate a sublingual spray, after calculating the effective dose for Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Facing the current circumstances and with no grants or funding available to OctaGenix Limited, I consider it my social responsibility to devise an instantaneous solution by involving the top research centres and by dispensing the free of charge prescriptions for the initial exploratory study.
