While they can be seen as a luxury, massages are often part of healthcare – here’s how they affect physical and mental health

If you want to have a more successful outcome you always need to approach your treatments from a global perspective.

In this week's Massage Mondays I talk about mobilising the ankle, keeping in mind how this can influence the behaviour of the whole body. I often find that restricted ankle mobility can lead to lower back pain, shoulder and neck restrictions, as well as knee problems. Hence, when I assess a problem I include a whole body assessment.

This does not mean I have to test ROM for every joint, but I prefer to deliver a top to toe massage, especially for the first session. This is what I term search and find, it is important to get a clear picture of the relationship between each area of the body.

I leave my judgement for later; I avoid trying to come up with any conclusions right away. Instead I use a body diagram to record my findings which helps to bring clarity into the situation by looking at the bigger picture. It is amazing the patterns of tension, compensation, and restrictions that I can see by looking at the whole.

The shoulder might be the expression of pain but the cause might be the restrictions in the ankle, go global, it will serve you well.
