When appetite is low, aim for “good enough”, not perfect.

Try smaller portions and familiar favourites, with drinks within easy reach. If chewing is tiring, softer choices can help without making meals feel “special”. Sitting together, even for 10 minutes, can make eating feel easier.

If meals are often skipped, jot down what’s best tolerated and when, it can really help families and clinicians.

Save for later.

Some days, there just isn’t much energy, and that can be hard to see as a family.

Try a gentle check-in, offer one or two simple choices, and let rest be rest. If they’re up to it, keep any activity small and manageable.

If tiredness feels sudden, ongoing, or is affecting everyday life, note any patterns and speak to a healthcare professional.

Save for later or share with someone who might need this.

Checking in on someone is more than asking “How are you?”
Older adults often reply “I’m fine”, even when life feels challenging for them.
Try gentle, open questions instead, such as:

• “What has your week been like?”
• “Is anything feeling a bit harder at home?”
• “What would make things easier for you at the moment?”

Then listen without rushing to fix everything. Feeling heard can be as helpful as any practical support.

If you are starting to worry that someone is no longer safe spending nights alone, live-in care can be a calm alternative to a move away from home.

With Home Instead, a Live-in Care Professional can be there around the clock, helping with washing, dressing, meals, medication prompts and companionship.

Families often feel more at ease knowing someone is there day and night. If you would like to talk through live in care, our local Home Instead team is ready to listen.

If you care for a loved one, January can feel tiring, especially after the holidays.
It is okay to admit that you feel a little overwhelmed and fatigued.

Try to plan one small break each week, even if it is just a quiet hour to yourself.

Let a trusted friend or relative know how things really are and accept offers of help with shopping, lifts or sitting with your loved one.

You do not have to manage everything alone, and Home Instead is here whenever you need an extra pair of hands.

Today is Brew Monday, created by Samaritans to remind us there is no such thing as Blue Monday, but there is always time for a cuppa and a catch-up.

If someone older in your life has gone a bit quiet, today could be the day you send a text, pick up the phone or pop the kettle on together.

You do not need perfect words. Just listen, let them talk and stay present.

Supporting a loved one with dementia can feel especially hard in winter, with early evenings and changes to routine. Families can worry about safety, confusion and how to manage on tired days.

At Home Instead, our dementia care is built around familiar faces, regular visits and calm, unhurried support. We follow the person’s own pace, with help for washing, dressing, meals and gentle reminders.

We are also here for families, offering reassurance and time to rest.
