Today I met one of my heroes 🤩
Paul Sinton-Hewitt, founder of Parkrun, at the 20th year celebration of parkrun UK at Bushy parkrun.

Thank you Paul for inspiring me to exercise (no matter the weather) on a personal level and to make a difference on a professional level. You may never know just how many lives you’ve impacted but I hope you know that my life is better because of you and the Parkrun community and I’m so grateful.

Family, friends, Prince and 6200 others at Bushy Park’s 1000th Parkrun! So awesome to be part of this memorable event.

Very interesting article and research on Rheumatoid Arthritis and possible origin of autoimmune disease.

Imbalances in gut bacteria have been linked to the development of most autoimmune diseases. The information is complex and unfolding, with many questions still to be answered. Now some researchers are focussing on identifying specific bacterial species that might be involved in triggering autoimmunity. There is even the strong suggestion the certain bacteria can cross the gut wall and take up residence in small numbers in other body tissues, driving a marked inflammatory reaction from the immune system.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that causes joint inflammation and pain. Autoantibodies (antibodies directed against host tissue) can be detected in individuals at risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis well before development of clinical disease. The source of these autoantibodies, however, remains unclear. Now a team of US scientists have identified that IgG and IgA autoantibodies from individuals who are at risk for RA cross-react against gut bacteria in the Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae families. Further analysis identified a specific bacterial strain from the Subdoligranulum genus that was associated with this autoantibody development. Mice colonised with this Subdoligranulum isolate developed arthritis with pathology similar to human RA. These findings suggest that this Subdoligranulum strain may be a major contributor to RA autoantibody development.

In aggregate, the findings demonstrate a mechanism of RA pathogenesis through which a specific intestinal strain of bacteria can drive systemic autoantibody generation and joint-centred antibody deposition and immune activation. This is not the full story of the cause of this complex disease, but it certainly highlights an important provocative role of gut bacteria.
