Huge thank you to Jane and the lovely team at Ruskington Methodist Church in Lincolnshire. 💙

Their very first Operation Smile coffee morning raised an incredible £301 – helping to bring life-changing cleft surgery and support for children around the world.

Not only did they raise vital funds, they also helped spread the word about our work in their community – and we couldn’t be more grateful. ☕💬💙

➡️ Truth: Cleft lip and cleft palate occur worldwide — including here in the UK.

In high-income countries, children usually receive surgery early in life. As they grow up, no-one would know they were born with a cleft condition.

In many low- and middle-income countries, however, limited access to free, safe healthcare and a shortage of trained surgeons means children may wait years for treatment, or never receive it at all. The impact on their lives can be devastating.

And that’s why Operation Smile exists. We work in 37 countries around the world, to increase access to safe, timely cleft surgery and comprehensive care for children who would otherwise go without. 💙

Shine’s mum Patience cried and cried when she saw her baby daughter. 😢 Her doctor told her that surgery for her cleft condition was possible thanks to Operation Smile – but Patience didn’t really believe it.

Then her sister saw a poster. A poster showing a baby just like Shine – before and after surgery.

When Patience brought Shine to an Operation Smile surgical programme, she realised she wasn’t alone. 💙 And when Shine was placed back in her arms after surgery, Patience felt truly happy for the first time in many months.

Back home, everything changed. Her neighbours, who once turned away, now wanted to hold her beautiful little girl. ✨

Today, Shine is thriving. She’s happy, a fast learner, and surrounded by friends.

Children like Shine are what Operation Smile is all about. Thank you so much for your support. 😀

For years, little Valentine was intimidated and bullied by her community.😞 Instead of inviting her to play, local children would harass her in the street – all because she was born with a cleft condition.

Thankfully, Valentine’s life was turned around when she was five years old and had free surgery at an Operation Smile surgical programme in Rwanda, performed by Dr Françoise Mukagaju. 🤩

Dr Françoise is Rwanda’s first ever female cleft surgeon. Her expert surgical training was provided by Operation Smile. And with your support, more surgeons, dentists, nurses and other professionals are learning to deliver outstanding cleft care, bringing it closer to those in need.

We’re so grateful to everyone who has donated to our ✨ Summer Appeal 2025 ✨ so far.

We are delighted to welcome Patrick Aylmer to our Board of Trustees.

Patrick brings an absolute wealth of experience a chartered accountant, with 20 years of experience in investment banking. He is currently the Managing Director of Fox Funding, a property finance business. Previously, Patrick was Investment Director of a FTSE-100 corporate, and he spent four years as Finance Director of the Elton John Aids Foundation.

Patrick also brings his extensive experience and expertise to the board’s Finance and Audit Committee, for which we’re forever grateful! Patrick says,

“I’m honoured to join the Board of Trustees at Operation Smile. The organisation’s mission to transform children’s lives through safe surgery resonates deeply with me.

Babies in countries like Rwanda are suffering because of untreated cleft conditions. 😔

Many babies struggle to feed, facing life-threating malnutrition. Others face breathing problems and speech difficulties, not to mention damaging bullying and stigma as they grow up.

Their families are often unaware that reconstructive surgery is even possible and, when they do, it’s out of reach for them.
